BIIIIIG Mistake.........Oh deary deary me. Matt you stupid dick!
I went and handled me a D200 today! Worst mistake of my life. Bitten by the bug well and truly. Wonderful viewfinder, satisfying sounds and build. Fast - everything about it is just on the money. Arse!!!! There may be light at the end of the tunnel however. Sam wants a camera. Has done for a while. I was thinking of buying her a D50/70 but now methinks I should upgrade to the D200 and give her my D70. The price in Teds was $2900 though, which is an awful lot of dough. Incidentally, I think I spotted fellow forum member phillipb in there too -not sure though. Somebody tell me something bad about the camera to quench my thirst for this piece of kit. PLEASE. Matt
thats what happens. having handled the d200, using the d70 will never be the same.
they should make birdy put all his toys behind perspex at the minimeets also. lots of members would be richer about not Steve check out my image gallery @

Matt it has banding issues
hey the d200 wont make you a better photographer it may spoil you though think about this you got your smoke images published in Cream all that great work you did was on a d70, why upgrade? ha
Wendell according to the Nikon press release it's only the early released D200s that have this. Not sure how true this is though, will keep an eye on the issue and maybe decide end of the year if I want to change over.
Darryl (aka Kipper)
Nikon D200
bad thing: it costs $2900
with that money you can fly to Ibiza with Sam and have an endless summer vibing to groovy housebeats and sipping Midori in company with your beloved D70
Re: BIIIIIG Mistake.........
Go to Dpreview and look at the forums. Thousands of doomsayers there with a fetish for photographing lightbulbs at +4EV who are having no end of dramas with the D200. Like Wendell says, some examples are having banding problems which Nikon have offered to at least minimize if not fix... By the time you can get your hands on one the problem "should" be solved. If it wasn't for the banding issue, I would have had a D200 4 weeks ago but Nikon are holding up release of the second batch till they sort the problem. If I'm alone in a forest and my wife is not around to hear what I say, am I still wrong ??
Well, there's going to be problems with every batch until around a year or two after the bloody thing was originally released.
Look at the D70 as an example: The first batch suffer from the BGLOD issue. The next batch suffer from the faulty CF card slot (ever seen "CHA" often? that's your problem). There's always going to be problems that can't be properly ironed out in QA. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Hehehe, you may pay dearly for that mistake. But I like the idea of giving Sam the D70 and you taking the upgrade.
Have you been to Ibiza Wendell? I'd rather lick a cats arse than go there with the thousands of Brits. The scenery looks great it's just my fellow countrymen that I'd be unable to avoid. I know it's a hell of a lot of money and I don't need to upgrade. I don't need a new computer or iPod, but dammit, I want them so bad. It was just so nice Give me a couple of days and the lust will have subsided. Matt
Matt,
I too had the "misfortune" to have a play with Keith's D200, and I too was, er, convinced. Thanx, Keith. Just trying to figure out how one can afford a D200, plus getting to KL for the GP, becausethe D200 seems like a perfect tool for this event. g.

Wife just upgraded to captain, and told me that she wanted to get me one.
I wished she'd have kept it a secret and just brought the damn thing home for me one day. Now, everytime she says "hey let's talk" I hope to hell that she's going to talk about wandering over to Broadway Cameras to get one. Of course it ends up being about how her back is sore and wouldn't mind it if someone rubbed her back for a while. Geez. She's working it on purpose.
You'd have to find a very tolerant cat! Might be easier, and a lot less painful claw wise, to buy the D200 and take photos of a cats arse instead. Probably would be better for the tongue too! Then you'd need very tolerant dlsr members to discuss the photographic merits of your cats arse photo uploads on this forum. If banding doesn't worry you, get it, otherwise might be better to wait. Re: BIIIIIG Mistake.........
The gallant thing to do is to buy her a D200, and hope that she says "this is way too much camera for me, why don't you use it and I'll use the old one". My vague sense of the female intuition is that the only second hand items which are acceptable are ones which they have selected themselves.
I'm surprised you manage to find a D200 in stock somewhere to fondle Matt. They're sold out or backordered with bloody long waiting lists nearly everywhere!
But why stop at only 1? You're a published pro now, so you'll need to have a backup. 2x D200 = D400 powah!!!111ONE
Re: BIIIIIG Mistake.........
Definitely not me Matt. 2 reasons, A) if it was me I would have come over and say hello, B) I'm broke so no lusting for me for a while. Good luck with your decision though. __________
Phillip **Nikon D7000**
The Camera House near Michael's in Melbourne. ( Can't recall which street, but it's in the CBD) had two in stock last week. Ready to go, not claimed by anyone. That's the fun part of travelling around the Australian Capital cities regularly. There's no shortage of weird and wonderful lenses to put my D70 on. I should publish my list of favourite camera stores for a tour around Australia. Actually, my favourite store is in Boseman, Montana. How often do you see Hassalblad bits just lying around? (Hmm. Don't think I spelt that properly...) People put way too much rubbish in signature blocks.
Sorry I took my camera to the meet... Not
the one you had in your hot little hands was not a $2900 camera it was a $2645 one from ECS in Drummoyne and if you go in there and pay for one you will be surprised how fast you will get one (they are maxwell stock so have full warranty) nearly all the people on their list have not payed and are just on the list so paying moves you up the list fast

When I had a short play with a D2X, I found it was a little too bulky for me, I loved the shutter on it, but I'm happy with the size and weight of the D70 at present. The colour reproduction on the D2X is sublime though..
I handled a D200 with verticle grip last week, the guy uses it for studio and wedding photography he LOVES IT.
But for me after I played with it, it was back to the D70s and I don't much care for the D200 untill I have one, Im happy with what I've got at the moment. Are we there yet?
I like the D200, but I think I want the D2h more.

Oddly enough, my preference is for the D200.
I find the D2X, as good as it is, is too big and heavy for the usage I would give it. I have little need for the secondary shutter release, and so that is a non0feature for me. In fact, it's actually on the wrong side of the camera for how I use one in portrait mode. OTOH, the handling of the D200 felt just about right for me, and that big bright viewfinder .... As Lindy said over the weekend however, I don't need one. Since when has that ever stopped me? g.

Matt,
Go with the D200! Apart from the banding issue (which Nikon are aware of and working on) the reviews of this little beauty have been absolutely outstanding right across the board. I have one on order (like johndec) and can't wait to get my hands on it. Better to wait than to have bought one of the duds, eh?. Teds in the city here in Brisvegas had them for $2900 (too much IMHO) and Photo Continental for $2640 Cheers Michael
Finch,
I was at Maxwell this morning, no new stocks. Beware of some new D200s in stock somewhere with resellers: those D200s are the returned/ swapped units after their customers returned due to the banding issues. Yes, I met one guy bought a new D200 last week, took his D200 to Maxwell this morning, requesting to swap a new unit (His dealer has no stock atm) Birddog114

Nice thought, but my birthday is two months after Malaysia. Which would be the first event I'd want the camera for. g.

Matt. Now you understand why I studiously avoided all contact with Keith's D200 at Catarct Dam. You were warned

FWIW I gave my D70 to my wife. Now I am having a birthday. SWMBO gave me $4000 to spend on camera gear.
My D200 is on order with a 2Gb card, and a 105 macro has arrived with a spare battery. Money left over. Now she has bought an 18-200VR lens for the D70 herself, and I play with that until my D200 arrives. Initial reports look good. C'MON NIKON!! Or as she says, at least when I get it the problems will be ironed out... Share what you know, learn what you don't.

Nice work, I hope it arrives soon, not a bad birthday Haul!
Re: BIIIIIG Mistake.........
Apart from some banding issues and weak battery......Matt get it I am loving my ones... Also Nikon on Broadway sell Maxwell stock at $2595. I bought both of my ones plus grip from them. You must get the vertical grip too Vincent
Hi All,
Why is it that the D200 is nowhere to be seen except in Teds on Pitt Street? I went in there today and I too had a play with it (D200 that is) and I've fallen into the same trap as Matt. But what amazes me is why is it still on the self. Price is $2899 while it's the last one. Most likely the only one they got in. I find that weired. Presonally, I wouldn't buy that particular one knowing that everyone in Sydney has played with that one. Bill
I played with one in japan recently. Put back on shelf before visa card got itchy.

Right place, right time, where the hecks my camera ...
Hmmm, methinks I'd better not touch one until I have the money ready to go. I already want one badly and I haven't seen it yet!

I almost bought the D200 for my wife's birthday until we had a talk which basically ended when she said D50 is too simple for her, D70 is about right and the D200 is tooo complex. But she didnt want a repeat purchase of a D70. Women!
