Ok Chris, there's your answer. Hell$tra sites are not affected by this issue.

Good luck! I've called them on a separate issue (DSL disconnect) Monday: 47 Minutes on hold, Tuesday: 43 minute on hold.

Have just spoken to Optus, they already have one email and would ideally like 5 to 10 to help them with tracing the problem.

Emails should be sent to cablesupport@optusnet.com.au and so we have a consistent easily recognisable subject line put in "problem accessing http://www.dslrusers.net" Include your optus user name and traces as described above by Gary and Steve.

Thanks in advance

For what its worth, I have been able to log on via d70users.com and not dslrusers.net. I'm also with Optus and also end up getting the numbers 61.88.88.88 on screen.

Good luck with fixing problem, guys

Cheers

Michael

ps - Glen - have also emailed Optus on the above email address, as requested

What info did they want included in the email Glen?

I only understand a fraction of what this thread's on about, so a step by step instruction set would be most helpful ;)

Michael, an email to Optus would help them trace the problem

Hopefully this will be sorted soon.

My information is that it has now been escalated to Singtel, but even so, Optus users should continue to send their nastygrams to Optus to help them understand that there is an issue here.

Leon,

open a command window and enter the following command:

tracert http://www.dslrusers.net

Press your enter key, and wait until the trace completes. You'll see events logged similar to those quoted earlier in this thread.

Create a new email to the address noted by Glen, set the subject line as noted by Glen, include a few lines to the effect that you cannot access the site, include your Optus account details, and copy and paste the tracert output from your command window into your email.

Press Send.

:)

Just had a response from Optus saying the issue may be due to server load and a poor route and if I know the address of the server to provide a trace route so they can investigate further.

Step by step (from a bloke who knows nothing)

Get up the command promp (under accesories if you are an xp user)

type in ipconfig /flushdns

close and reopen command prompt

type in tracert http://www.dslrusers.net

Copy all info to your email

do above again with .com instead of .net

send email to them explaining you can access http://www.dslrusers.com but not .net and that you understand it is an Optus problem as Telstra users have unfettered access to both sites, but we do not. Ask them to fix it. Put "Problem accessing http://www.dslrusers.net" in subject line. Mention that both sites are hosted at dreamhost. Point out you know at least 15 Optus guys having trouble and 15 Telstra guys not. Say something like here are my trace results. Send to cablesupport@optusnet.com.au

Anyone who knows something feel free to correct my instructions

Michael,

Instructiond for running a tracert have been posted a few times already in this thread, including by me just a post or three back. The hostname and IP address are http://www.dslrusers.net [64.111.112.203]

As to server load, that's absolute bullshit, and it's somebody talking through their arse.

Tell them that it's been like this for at least 36 hours!

If you're too lazy to find the command prompt in Windows' menus, press on your keyboard Windows key + R and type in "cmd" without the quotes and press enter.

Just my $0.02, but here at ANU (I am at a residential college) I can't access the .net site. My sources also tell me that we have a connection here to the Optus backbone, so that explains why I haven't been able to connect to .net site.

Also, another interesting matter is that my domain, also hosted at dreamhost, on occasion gets redirected to the BBC webpage for some reason. Go figure! :)

It dies in my traces at a Singtel - which is Optus routing - link.

In this morning's test, I can accessthe site through a PT connection, but not through Exetel, and from what I can tell, none of out Optus users can either.

Exetel uses Optus, PT don't.

Spot the common element here. :)

Both Killakoala and myself aren't on Optus and we have exactly the same symptoms as the Optus users. So I still don't understand how it can be inferred that it's an Optus problem.

Finally, after a number of emails to Optus (and much emailing and ringing from others - thanks) and 36+ hours later, I'm able to log on to dslrusers.net again.

Now, where was I......?

Oh, checking out new posts

Russell,

I never said that it was exclusively an Optus problem.

That said, I'm not on Optus either, but the problem I was experiencing was with the upstream link that my ISP provides, and that is through Optus.

And that is where the link was broken for myself, and, it seems, for Optus users, and also, it seems, for a nuimber of other members here whose ISPs also purchase their upstream links from Optus.

hey lads yeah im having same problem here. An ISP connected to WAIX. Routing back through CCA, leaves aus via an NZ route, doesnt touch optus.

Can resolve. Cant ping.

Traceroute shows it goes out via CCA, through a bunch of their hops, then hits NZ successfully then winds up somewhere in the states and goes to shit.

Weird. Some kind of whacko BGP routing or other oddball problem going on. Dont reckon it's inside aus, issue seems to be occuring in the US of A.

edit add on ;

interestingly just tried from a client's network (vpn in) and can access dslrusers.net

and in doing a trace, it goes through optus. (yet works)

id suggest dreamhost arent broadcasting BGP routes correctly to some of their peers, or route tables are corrupt at some of the immediate networks nearby in and out of dreamhost. (ie, at neighbour vicinity theres probably 4 or 5 gateways connected to dreamhost / its provider, and some are seeing advertised routes, some arent.)

I think there's plenty more important things around that make 'baby jesus cry', but let's not get into that here (even if it is just a throwaway line) ;)

It seems this is all fixed - does anyone NOT using an Optus backbone still have a problem?

I never said that it was exclusively an Optus problem.

Then why are you asking people to send "nastygrams" and "not accept bullshit answers" from Optus?

There are four users: myself, avkomp, Killakoala and now darb that have posted evidence of a routing issue in the USA, and most of it points to dreamhost. avkomp, darb and my traceroutes succeed all the way to the last hop and then fail on the last connection to dreamhost. As darb says, this clearly suggests a routing issue in the USA, probably as a result of route broadcasting by dreamhost.

If this is the case, complaining to Optus or any other ISP is about as useful as complaining to them about the weather!
I suggest you raise the issue with dreamhost.

Because the Optus problem had already been rectified several hours before you tried this.

id suggest dreamhost arent broadcasting BGP routes correctly to

There was certainly a DH DNS issue, but that was fixed well before any of the issues we're seeing manifested themselves here.

And the problems persisted not simply for well over 36 hours beyond the original point when DH reported the problem as being resolved, but also for a similar period whereby the Optus connection (through Singtel, who own Optus, and it seems, through other connections as well) were failing to correctly resolve the host, but through other means/connections the routing was seemingly resolving perfectly right through the whole time.

That is vdery strongly suggestive of issues beyond the original DNS issue at DH, presuming of course that it was been the original DNS issue at DH that caused the problem, which is simply not known, nor proven by the facts of the situation.

Hi Gary,

still having the problem here, I'm with Internode, same as Thaddeus I think.

Have you tried to do a traceroute back to here? If you go to the .net machine at dreamhost, can you do a traceroute back to my IP, http://www.marpware.com.au (IP: 150.101.114.82)? Of course this would entirely depend that the CLI you get from dreamhost is actually the real machine that hosts dlsrusers.net.

Going from the USA back to here may help point to the bottleneck,

Still is at the USA end, just before getting to dreamhost

Here is my trace result, and a snipped reply from my ISP re trying to trace a route to dslrusers.com and .net below that.

Tracing route to http://www.dslrusers.net [64.111.112.203]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 9 ms 16 ms 16 ms 10.200.0.20
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 * * * Request timed out.
4 * * * Request timed out.
5 * * * Request timed out.
+ another 25 timed outs more...

Optus problems shouldn't affect us, as our carriers are Tel$tra and AAPT.

I tried to get to DSLRusers.net\.com and have had no luck...even when using a USA based anonymous web proxy ( http://www.the-cloak.com i couldn't get to it, maybe the site is down. The trace that you sent is quite abnormal, it indicates that our router couldn't find a route out to the site. I also bypassed our router and did a trace directly out our connection....it got to AAPT's New Zealand global exchange and carked it there, indicating that AAPT also couldn't find a route to the site.

seems its definitely not only an optus problem.

cheers, Gordon

Seems to be fixed for me now also, after being mostly inaccessible all week, and partially usable last night (only on .com), things seem back to normal now.

Cheers

Having just got back online, and having read through this thread I thought I would leap in and make a couple of comments:

1. It appears everyone was resolving to the right address 64.111.112.203. (This would have been a good test)

2. This implies that it was not a DNS error, but a routing error (this could be anything, BGP records etc...)

3. It was not just Optus as my home account is with Netspace, that routes through Bigpond and work is with Telstra and both of them were faulty for a while.

Not sure how this helps, just avoids some misinformation.

Are you sure that Netspace routes through Helstra? Are you perchance confusing the routing with the use of Helstra's landlines, which is the situation most of us are stuck with at the moment?

You're the first person that's reporting that there was an issue through their services, and right through, we have traces that suggest that their routing was fine.

What does your trace show?

I am now at work, on the ANU network, and dslrusers.net is not reachable from here, but .com is.

It may take a bit longer for the correct routing info to flush through, especially to the SSO site as it's behind even more IP routing. As Ozonejunkie alluded to, the ANU hosts a major aarnet->Optus backbone/onramp as well. Give it a couple of day for the routing tables to be flushed and updated (as per specified TTL routing info).

Fozzie - yeah, my Internode ADSL connection is working fine today as well.

radar, I sent a ticket to internode over the issue last night. Had the site working perfectly the next morning and closed the ticket. Might explain why it works. :D
