Not exactly the oldest photograph and I wouldn't spend four million on either that nor any of the amount on a single Henson.

I'd like to hear what the buyer says to justify spending that much money on it.

What an excellent description.... I can think of better things to get than to blow $4 million on a photo. Maybe it's a tax write off? Hassy, Leica, Nikon, iPhone
Come follow the rabbit hole...
This is not just about a photograph but of Edward Steichen himself.
He photographed Matisse and one of my favourites - A Portrait of Miss Sawyer and has become one of the Legends of Photography. This is not just about money, but of a collector wanting a Steichen photograph. Chris

Isn't it also about where the photo is taken in terms of historical context of photography?
Ansel Adams' work doesn't really stand out from a lot of the current photographers, but he was a pioneer in nature photography, so his prints sell a hell of a lot more.

You are perfectly correct Steichen and Steiglitz are both heaviliy collected and their works are art of the highest order. Collecters know what they are doing when they fork out millions for this stuff. Regards

mmm.... there are many things I could do with a lazy 4m

If you had 4 mill to spend on a photograph, you'd already have those things Steve.

And when you are dead the price goes up. Craig Craig
