Plane shooting in Adelaide

Does anyone likes shooting planes Anyone knows where is the best place to shoot plane in Adelaide?
And what kind of equirment usually use?

Hmm... Western end of the runway at Adelaide airport?

There are a few old birds, I think there is a Wirraway amongst them, that operates out of a small field down at Noarlunga. The field itself is just south of the Onkaparinga. I used to live on a hill over looking that field just the other side of the river. These guys are not to shy about aerobatics down there. I used to enjoy sitting out the front of the house watching these guys strut their stuff. There were also a few other interesting aircraft there. Have an ask around.
I will tell you however, that I have not been in that neck of the woods for 7 years or so. It would not suprise me if the field is now gone and replaced by a housing development.

Hi Tyrone,
I don't shoot planes but my father-in-law likes to look at them and he goes just outside the airport. If you want to go on a shoot with some other people for planes, PM Big V or Fozzie - they are usually up for a shoot with others.

Tyrone, Fozzie and myself have been to shoot planes at the airport although the haze is sometimes a pain but fozzie has stalked the airport and would know some good spots.

The viewing area at the end of the main runway, you get to it from tapley hills road. It is well sign posted...
If you want the old warbirds, then go down south to old noarlunga, just of main south road about 35 km from the city.
Parafield airport is good for little planes.
Equipment wise - the biggest you have from the viewing platform. If you are up close i.e tarmac, then a wide angle helps to get some interesting compositions.
Gliders can be found at Gawler..

depending on where in the world you ask this, the answers range from slr camera to RPG 7

I used to go to my local airport but havent been since they beefed up security.

there are quite a few spots around sydney where I can photograph stuff at sydney airport.
I found that after the sun has been out a while and the runways heat up, haze can be an issue so prefer early mornings.

whether 70-200 is enough lens will depend on how close you are to the action and what sort of planes you are photographing
there are times in sydney where I back off to 80mm, having arriving/departing aircraft filling the frame. airliners are big
other times 400mm isnt enough for me. since they wont let me on aprons these days

you will soon know whether you will have enough lens or not. If you are only able to get small images of planes on the frame, you will need more lens.
In any case it is fun to go watching em, the pix are a bonus

I took the following 4 shots from one spot.
The lens used was 80-400vr
thought it may be of interest to show the relative plane sizes with various focal lengths
Note that in all 4 cases, this the full frame no PP other than usm
firstly a UA 747 shot @80mm

another 747 but @ 240mm

2 737s @400mm

and finally a 737 @ 200mm


All shot from the same position with d70 and a range of focal lengths as indicated.
shows that depending on what you are after 200mm may be ok, but also illustrates having some extra reach.

I've seen people shooting from both carpark/viewing areas around the end of the main runway on Tapleys Hill Road.

Once a guy even had a very long lens setup on a tripod on the tray of his ute...

Fozzie and I shot from there Oli oneday when i was up there last, but was a very hazy day but was ok.

Yeah, that's a pity if you make a trek down to shoot... I live right near the airport so if I had a long lens and wanted to shoot planes I could head down there anytime.

Oli, i was down there for docs so no special trip just to take pics, but was to spend a bit of time with Fozzie and a chin wag etc... and was a good afternoon. Plan on doing it again soon as i can.
