Buying Used Lenses

I am currently shooting with the standard lens that comes with the EOS350D and often find the pictures need quite a bit of sharpening in photoshop.

The lens I am considering is the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM.
Is it worth considering buying second hand? If so what sort of things should I look for to ensure the lens is in good condition?

This goes for any lens you buy second-hand.

Check the obvious things such as condition for any signs of rough handling or dropping, check the elements for any fungus growth.

Twist the zoom ring and see if you can notice any gripping or noise that doesn't sound right. Also do the same with the focus ring. Also check the aperture through the back of the lens to ensure that the aperture elements actually move.

Finally, put it on your camera and see if it works properly. Take some photos with it. Check for focus and sharpness and also colour rendition.

If you have ANY doubt at all, then go with your gut instinct and don't buy it. Never rush your decision. Take your time.

Just about all of my lenses are 2nd hand, if not all. I've saved thousands and there is nothing wrong with any of them. just have to be careful not do get a dud but I've never had any problems.

Half of my lenses are second hand. They were both bought from a friend who tends to buy L lenses when in the US on business and then rarely uses them. He's an excellent supplier of good glass. But do check the lens thoroughly and if good, then go for it.

All my L series lenses were bought secondhand and all are in great shape. I am particularly fond of the 24-70mm. It's a great all-rounder and my most used lens.

Just follow the tips that Killakoala has offered and you will be fine.

Ditto for me, apart from my kit lens, my other 2 came second hand, including an L lens off ebay from Melbourne.

Second Hand at a good price is a worthwhile proposition. I'd always be happy to look at a secondhand lens over new.

Never buy one unless you can put it on your camera and try it.
