Graduated ND filters

Postby wmaburnett on Fri Feb 24, 2006 5:45 pm

I am thinking about moving up to a Cokin P series filters and was wondering when using Graduated Filters lets say a 2 stop difference, how do you meter with such filters? do you meter the foreground then apply the two stop grad filter?
Thanks!

William, I would put the ND filter on and let the meter do it's own thing.
The whole idea of the graduated filter is that it lets more light in on the clear end then it does on the dark end, so if you place the dark part over the highlighted part of the scene, the net effect is of a more balanced dinamic range.
Try it and see.

From a Cokin 'P' ND filter user, what Phillip said is quite correct. The inbuilt metering in DSLRs these days is very good and can be trusted to meter well with an ND filter on your lens. :)
