Except for the first day when I got my D70 and I hadn't read the manual, I've never used any of the "auto" modes. I do all my shots in Aperture, Shutter or Manual mode. I'm sure one of the more learned members will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there is much scope for manual adjustments in the Auto modes.

You can do virtually whatever you want in the P,S,A and M settings. Work out what you want to do and adjust one of those settings to suit. It's all in the handbook you got with the camera  PS: Welcome to the forum.

Quack... by default, if you pop up the flash the camera restricts you to 1/60th or faster. It also winds up ISO so be careful if you don't want that. This works well for portraits using flash. Portraits without flash require faster lenses to afford the faster shutter speeds.

Night landscapes and fast shutter speeds are contradictory.

If you want flexibility in your shooting, the second last thing you want is to be using the various picture taking modes on the camera.

Probably the first thing you need is some legs. and then to start to acquire some knowledge about some basic photographic techniques. Fortunately for you, we're about to start posting a few short papers on exactly these sorts of topics in the beginners section.

Getting back to your question: legs to support the camera. Switch to M mode. WB incandescant -1. NO flash. Use the self timer.

Are you shooting raw or jpg?

F5.6. and/or F8 focus, and play with shutter speeds from 1sec - 30 secs to start with.

Look at your results, and try to work out what's hapenning, what's working for you, and what's not.

Do post your results here, and we'll be more than happy to assist you in getting better results.

Also, update your profile to tell us where you're located; perhaps there's someone local to you who can go out shooting with you to help you learn some of this and teach you how to play more effectively.
