Cross-Screen Filter

Hi, I've mistakenly bough at auction a Hoya Cross-Screen filter, rather then a UV filter for my 10-20mm. I did a little poking around and the cross-screen filter (I haven't opened it) has a etched surface designed to make light sources appear with the "starburst affect" as far as I understand.

So I'm wondering, firstly if anyone has any experience with these filters, and should I just try to re-sell it, or could I use it similar to the UV filter ? Or will it cause a lot of unwanted degradation of the end image (regardless of the lighting involved?).

I don't want to open it and try it, if I can find out if its servicable or crap beforehand.

No, cross-screen filter is cross-screen filter, you can't use it as a substitution for UV filter.

Keep it and you may have fun with and get an extra UV filter.

This one is an effects filter. I'd say keep it and get yourself that UV as well.

Yeah, that's what I thought too, Birdy!

From sample shots that I've seen, that filter produces very obvious effects that IMO you wouldn't want on your day-to-day shots. But hey, if it didn't cost much, it could be a cool toy to play with

Thanks, I actually have more then one, so I might keep one and sell the other.

Still means I need a CPL and UV filter for my 10-20.. Sigh.

Its a interesting situation, but I can be very persuasive, but it has also cost me...

A new lounge suite, new Dinning Table, new, Television stand, new coffee table, new lamp table..

So I haven't gotten off scott free..... oh, and don't for get the 3 diamond, ring for our anniversary too.

We have the (newish) car, and no baby on the horizon yet.
Still have the Fiji trip... but atleast that offers good photo opportunities, the new furniture aint that fun to photography

Used to call these starburst filters 20 years ago. Had one and used it for special affects on some shots, all on film, will have to scan them one day. The filter was fun to play with, made my bike look really new and shiny when used in bright sunlight. Made night time city shots look very busy and weird.

Have a play when you have time after buying more bribes, sorry essential household items.

craig you can get some interesting effects with them.

weddings are a place where you might use one.
for instance when cutting the cake there might be two candles on the cake table and you could do a time exposure.
you might fire your flash at the wedding rings and get a little star reflection.

etc etc.
used to do this sort of thing quite often.

now that you are a wedding photog and all........

Well I wouldn't say that I am, but you and Sandyfeet have offered me a few extra ideas on how and where to use it. So I appreciate that.

you can pretty much use 'em whereever you may have points of light or even reflections.

The only problem is that if there are lots of lights around each one gets a little star and it can look way overdone.

Does your filter do something that you can do in Photoshop anyway? If it does then sell it.
