Absolute sacrilege

Postby gstark on Thu Dec 30, 2004 2:41 am

For the 60s music buffs amongst us ...

Just watching CNN here in LA, and an ad for Cingular, one of the local cellphone providers, just came on. Showing a car travelling through different parts of the country, it's punchline was that they have more bars everywhere you go.

More bars of signal strength, that is.

The background music? The Band's The Weight!

Using such an important song in an ad should be illegal!

Robbie Robertson

Postby the foto fanatic on Thu Dec 30, 2004 7:06 am

Well, gstark, succumbing to nostalgia?

I have always loved The Band, and especially Robbie Robertson, surely one of the most enigmatic musicians of his time.

I think he wrote this, didn't he?

Pulled in to Nazareth, feelin' bout half past dead.......

Dammit, now I'm nostalgic, too!

See ya

Yep, Robbie Robertson, The Band, and that's The Weight's first line or two.

Leigh ... The Band :)

One of the greatest songs of the 20th Century, used by a cellphone company ad. Someone needs to talk to their ad agency and tell them what is and isn't acceptable.

The Band

Gary
Just noticed that Fox Classics is showing The Band's last concert here tonight - 9:50pm Brisbane time, may be 10:50 (not sure whether they time-shift or not) in Sydney if you need someone to record for you.
Happy New Year :)

Trevor,

The Last Waltz? Thanx, but no need. I have the new version of this on DVD. Awesome.

And I just picked up the DVD of The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus this evening. Taj Mahal, Jethro Tull, Lennon, Clapton, Winwood ... I already have the music, but this DVD should be something special.

Also picked up a boxed set - Season 1 of Mork and Mindy. :)

Music DVDs

Postby the foto fanatic on Fri Dec 31, 2004 4:49 pm

Gary

I don't know the Rock & Roll Circus DVD.

But I have a few Clapton DVDs, my favourite being "One More Car. One More Rider". Clapton IS God, as we well know.
Also enjoyed seeing Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy et al in the Stevie Ray Vaughan memorial concert organised by Jimmy Vaughan.

There are also a couple of Stevie Ray DVDs around - the filming (on the ones I've seen anyway) a bit on the grainy side because of age, but his music - sensational.
:D
Cheers

That R&R Circus DVD will be interesting Gary, amazing that it was in the can for so long.

The Last Waltz is a sensational DVD, movie was made by Martin Scorcese no less.

I have two SVR DVDS at home that I've yet to watch.

As much as I love his playing, I don't like playing his stuff at the jams I go too. Too many wannabes doing poor versions of his stuff.

Keeping discussion in this thread going, this is a much better ad.

BB King, singing and playing, for diabetes awareness.

That's how it should be done.

Imitating SRV...

Postby the foto fanatic on Fri Dec 31, 2004 5:04 pm

I don't play a musical instrument, unfortunately. But I can play the fool!

But for anyone to try to play an SRV song like he does would be like me, with my 12 handicap, trying to play golf like Tiger Woods or Ernie Els. "He plays a game with which I am not familiar!" as Bobby Jones said of Jack Nicklaus.

Clapton on SRV "not too many gutarists intimidate me, but SRV is one who does"

Have fun :D

Brilliant. Lennon, Clapton, Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix) and Kieth Richard are wonderful to watch and listen to, as are The Who, with Moon in full flight, and Townsend playing a beautiful SG. One of my favourite guitars .....

The Last Waltz is a sensational DVD, movie was made by Martin Scorcese no less.

I know. Have you seen The Blues yet? 7 DVD documentary set? Well worth getting.
