CS2 and Nikon RAW

Hi all. I seem to be having a problem with CS2 and RAW files, that is if it is a problem at all. When I download my RAW files from the camera then open them in PS ( after camera raw does it's bit) I find that most of my filters are greyed out and I am only left with the basics such as blur, sharpen etc. I can still do a full manipulation on the image but then when I go to save the final product I am only allowed about 5 formats to choose from, luckily one of them is .Tiff. If I shut down CS2 and restart it and then open the saved Tiff file the result is the same. However if I open up a jpeg shot or something that I edited with the previous version of CS then all my filters are active and I have all formats to save in. I have checked the settings in preferences and all the filters are active. This never happened to me with the original CS.

Is this normal and I am aware of it or is there some problem/setting I need to look at?

Any help would be appreciated.

I use PS7, before having the full range of menu options available, have to "save as" the pic in .jpg (in Nikon View). I upload to Nikon View, check & adjust if required WB & Exposure, then save as a .jpg. When finished with that batch of pics, open PS then carry on as normal having the full range of menu options available.

rdv in CS2 try changing image - mode - 8 bit as many of the filters will not work at a higher bit depth.
Hope that cures it.

As per Greg S' reply, I think this will be a "bit depth" issue.

Your RAW images are likely to be in 16bit, whereas alot of the filters work in 8bit only....

If this doesn't work, let us know and I'm sure we can help you out further....

I had this happen and it sh!t me off for a while.

I just reistalled CS and it works fine (actually better, because the RAW handling actually worked faster for some reason also).

Had the same issue when I started using 16 bit. Camera Raw will default to what you used last, so change to 8 bit in Camera Raw and you should be right. I do most of my PP in 16 bit though. I always save the main work as a PSD in 16 bit with all layers intact. When I need to use an 8 bit filter, just convert to 8 bit then. You'll also have trouble saving in some formats if you have multiple layers or selections saved.

Thanks for all the input guys. You were right on the money. When i finished with all the important stuff like levels etc i converted to 8 bit and hey presto!! It all comes alive.

Apparently Adobe is working on making their filters work on 16 bit images - which will be a bonus! Apart from the fact that you effectively halve your storage capacity when saving 16-bit images!!

I tend to like working in 16-bit from RAW then saving off as 8-bit to save on space. I like the security of having the RAW file always there to fall back on and produce another 16-bit version if need be. It's like keeping the original tranny after scanning it, always there to go back to!
