Thought I'd sign up and see how this board is. Here is a bit about myself.

I'm using a Canon 10D with some rediculously expensive fast glass. I just can't help myself. So far in the last couple of months I've bought

Sigma 120-300f2.8
Canon 28-70f2.8L
Canon 70-200f2.8L
Sigma 15mm Fisheye f2.8

I love taking sports action, mostly cycling and am getting into macro a bit with some extension tubes. I'll buy a macro lens when my partner isn't looking and I have saved up a bit.

Here are some samples:

Nice images.

And the 10D is a very nice camera, with a great sensor and processing engine.

I notice that you're using any of the USM lenses; I've not investigated Canon's pricing structures, but my understanding is that the USMs are not all that expensive. Why did you opt for the faster glass rather than the USM, given the USM gives you another 2 or three effective stops anyway?

USM is what moves the elements during focus (Ultrasonic Motor). It is pretty standard on Canon lenses apart from the cheaper ones. Sigma calls it HSM. BUT "IS" is their image stabilisation thingy, probably the same as Nikon "VR" I'd presume. That isnt' cheap. On the 70-200 lens it is an extra 50%. As I'm after fast shutter speed IS doesn't do all that much for me anyway. I need fast glass. I use a monopod for my big lenses too so that helps.

Thanx for the clarification re the IS/USM nomenclature.

I understand what you're saying about needing the fast shutter speed, so yes, the faster lens is, indeed, what you need.

Petal has a nice collection of high end zoom tele's that could make any photog pitch a tent... or maybe it's just me. ;)

Canon's USM models in their lens lineup are far more abundant than Nikon's comparable AF-S. Then again, it's standard practice to have plastic lens mounts too in the lower end consumer range - which are more an exception for Nikkors.
