Opinions...

Postby Geoff on Fri Mar 17, 2006 8:33 am

Well - this is very off topic but I had a big laugh to myself last night, wanted your opinion on this.

I have only a few pet hates in life, one of them is people throwing their cigarette buts on the ground (worse still in a gutter).

I was on my way to work last night stuck in peak hour traffic, on the other side of the road I saw a woman with some friends, who stubbed out her cigarette butt and threw it in the gutter - if I wasn't as far away as what I was I would have wound my window down and told her what I thought.

She was standing outside a restaurant with it's phone number well advertised. I called the restaurant and asked them to let her know that she had dropped something and to get her to come to the phone - even better, they took the cordless phone to her out on the main road, so I could see and hear what was happening.

The kind restaurant owner handed over the phone were I politely but assertively told this woman I could see what she'd just done and that her butt would only end up in our beautiful harbour - I told her not to be a tosser and pick up her butt that she'd just thrown in the gutter, and what a disgusting thing it was to do. There was absolutely no way she could have seen me as I was on the opposite side of the rd and there was a steady stream of traffic between us. She looked around and was dumb founded, her response was 'ok, thanks'.

There's not a lot that REALLY bugs me, but this is one issue I really have with mankind! Someone was watching her, it was me and hopefully she'll think twice about doing it next time.

Your thoughts? Vigilante or a bit wankish?

Hah! Nice one ;)

IMO it's not just ciggy butts, it's any type of rubbish that people throw on the ground without thinking. What, you can't carry it a few metres to the nearest bin??

Onya for actually doing something about it. Most of us (myself included) would probably have just fumed and ranted about it, but never actually work up the courage to tell them off.

Good work Geoff. Getting one person to change their ways is an excellent start to having a broader effect. Your actions may just have a positive effect on the woman in question - at the very least, she will think about it next time - and the effect can flow from there.

Plus it would have been fun :D

Great work Geoff.

It was hard to tell from your description is she actually picked it up, she said 'ok thanks' but then did she act on it and clean up her litter.

Must of been a bit of a trip, getting a phone call like that, a lot like in the movies where the killer/spy/ransom holder is on the phone but the other guy has no idea where they are.

Great story.

Good question Craig - the traffic started to move and I couldn't easily see, but I actually don't think she went to pick it up - silly woman.

Maybe you could include people that evacuate their nose on to the pavement - this happened in front of me yesterday.

Now I agree on cigarette butts but to have the substance lurking in someones nostrils propelled out is to me not only criminal but a massive health hazzard.

Great stuff Geoff. Dropping cigarette butts is probably at the top of my list of "what makes my blood boil".

I remember that NSW had a hotline where you could ring up and dob in someone who had thrown a butt from a car. I think it was more to stop bush fires but if would be a useful to at least get people thinkng about what they are doing.

Unfortunately QLD doesn't have anything similar so I have to resort to silently fuming when ever I see it happen.

My Dad worked and help write pollution laws with the EPA for most of his working life - he still has the authority to book ppl who throw butts from their cars and he does so about once/twice a month - FAR less than what he did some 2 years ago. Interesting. I think it's now a $200 fine - should be $2000 in my humble opinion.

But fun if not there if:
- You got caught and booked coz you're using the phone while driving without handsfree (In case, You don't have bluetooth or handfree device installed)

- You might get sued coz she may counter-attack by claiming you were stalking her over the phone.

Yes, they can track back where is original of the call and you don't have proof to say that she threw the butt into the gutter.

Bring and mount your 70-200VR on top of the car's roof and get it ready in action to capture those rare images to protect yourself.

Geoff,

This truly has an air of elegance about it that I simply lov.

You should have told her that she needed to trot herself off to the local police station and hand herself in for littering, and that if she didn't present herself there within 30 minutes, she'd be in very serious trouble.

How's about people spits out from car windows or on the street?

Is it same as cigarette butt?

In my opinion it is far worse than a cigarette butt. A cigarette butt will not spread disease - spitting and nose evacuation can and does spread disease.

I think spitting is disgusting, and has some potential serious health hazard consequences, however cigarette butts pollute our harbours, kill our fish/wildlife and take a VERY long time to biodedegrade. Whilst airborne spittle spread germs etc - it usually lands on the ground and dries out - in NO way do I condone spitting, but I think the butts are more prominent than the disguting nature of ppl spitting out their window etc etc...

Some advice to smokers who have gardens. Save the butts and when you have two handfulls place them in a litre of water with some liquid washing up fluid. Leave to ingest for a week or two and then filter. The resulting solution can be used to spray onto plants to rid them of aphids and other little buggers.

Butts can have a use.

Niether Spitting or Butts have a place in the street, or any public areas, niether are polite or environmentally friendly, yet both are common place. :(

Is it same as cigarette butt?

I think spitting is disgusting, and has some potential serious health hazard consequences, however cigarette butts pollute our harbours, kill our fish/wildlife and take a VERY long time to biodedegrade. Whilst airborne spittle spread germs etc - it usually lands on the ground and dries out - in NO way do I condone spitting, but I think the butts are more prominent than the disguting nature of ppl spitting out their window etc etc...

Geoff,
Did you read the paper and news on TV we should wear mask in this flu season?

In my opinion Birdy - this is media hype, however....

Geoff's BARGAINS:

Face masks - $3 each or 6 for $15

Geoff,
Sources are from medical research experts and from Health Dept.

So you did stock up those for some reasons? and they're surpluses from where you're working?

I know personally about 33 people that are off sick with the flu, or just coming back from it. (Including Katie and Myself). So there are definitely a lot of germs out there, but I am not sure how affective the masks are at protection yourself or others.

(Public transport is the killer though, that and elevators, one person sneezes everyone has a chance of enhaling the little buggers.)

Actually, the wearing of masks is an official recommendation for the coming flu season, for those who are infected.

But you've given me an idea ... :)

stand by.

I can't reveal my sources :)

Sure - it's a warning from the Health Department.
My I offer some simple advice for the upcoming 'flu' season:

1. eat lots of fresh fruit and vegies
2. get enough sleep (ok so I'm being a tad hypocritical right now)
3. exercise regularly

these 3 things will help boost each of our immune systems 'hopefully' to barrier 'naturally' against cold and flu.

Same here. :D Our Council has a program running where staff are authorised to fine people who litter from vehicles.

I've fined heaps of people over the last few years. The number of people who throw their rubbish in the foreshore carparks is sickening.
