http://akam.no/art.php?artikkelid=10167 Looks like tomorrow will be the day for the new Nikon announcments. D2x, and AFS VR Nikkor 300mm f2.8G IF-E are the leaks thus far. g.

Birddog,
I have just been reading the specs. 8fps in a cropped mode(6MP), 5fps @12MP for 15 frames shooting raw. GPS compatible, 802.11b/g compatible, multiple exposures possible ... This will be one hell of a camera. But it also (I think) demonstrates Nikon's commitment to the DX sensor size, with 12MP and the 1.5 FoV crop. I don't see them going to a full frame DSLR any time soon, which puts them into a somewhat different market space from where the big Canons are. One thing's for sure: this will not be a cheap camera. I'll be interested to see where the pricing places this camera in the market place - I expect it to be more expensive than the D2H, but not too much more. Maybe $6500 - $7000 ?? How much for the new sensor technology, and how soon will we see that drip feed down to the D90/D200 or whatever will be the D100's replacement? And then to the D55 ?? g.

I'm expecting around under AU$9000.00 (Maxwell stock) perhaps will be cheaper in overseas, with today rate US$.69. and the 300VR is around 10K.
Let look at the 17-55DX & my 200-400VR, in back-ordered nearly 6 months up todate and the 17-55DX closed to one year. NO stock and not a "boo" from the Disti both here and US. But these toys won't be available in Australia market at least April or June next year with very limited supply. Wait and see, perhaps I can work it thru the NPA in States, more priority than here, just guess!!!!! Great cam as its spec. then I'll retire the D100 if I got it. Birddog114

Yes it's, but it's still cheaper than your PHD study isn't it?
All pro gears ain't cheap MHD, I spent nearly 40K on my stuff Please let your wife know and she happily sign you up. Birddog114

From a cost point of view the PhD is cheap... Been on a scholarship most of it... From a loss of possible income point of view then yeah... it aint cheap... My dream is that one day I can get some casual work with my cam and earn enough money through that to slowly pay some of the cost of a cam... But I emphasise the word dream While the D2X looks like an absolutely awesome cam, What are the actuall advantages over the D70: More MP (for those that want to make BIG posters) Looks like they individually proccess each channel (RGB) Backwards compatibility with older flash units (D-TTL) Higher USB data rates GPS stamping 802.11b/g compatible max 8fps This for 4-5 times the cost of the D70... No... Unless I am earning bundles I will leave this one to the pros! That said, I decided to get the D70 instead of getting a car so all those people that can afford a 30K plus new car can definately afford a D2X Its all about trade offs */ramble*
The gold plate is normal for ED lenses.
What also looks interesting is the Coolpix 8800. 8MP, 10x zoom(ED), and VR! I guess that this will kill the 5700/8700 line. I'll post links to some images and PDFs later today, but the D2x + 300 looks like the only SLR stuff for Photokina; everything else seems to be P&S - CP8800, CP8400 and CP4800. g.

Styling changes not too diff from the D2H.
Enhanced matrix metering, but still the class topping 1005 segment RGB (as implemented in the lowly D70!). CMOS sensor - I believe LBCAST was largely CMOS technology anyways (from reading the released technical materials available), but I guess Nikon wanted to shed the negative connotation it's had with the high noise issues so heavily reported of the D2H's sensor. I predict high ISO noise will be an issue with the D2X, as the range of 100-800 might suggest (needing custom functions to push up sensitivities). The GPS EXIF embedding function was available in the D1X IIRC, so that's not really a new feature is it?! Unusual (IMHO) choice of going USB2, not firewire. I thought imaging professionals used sucky computers named after a common fruit - and firewire would make more sense... As for the 300/2.8VR, it seems the VR function is no longer a small switch, but rather a large ring to click engage/disengage. It's a sexy piece of glass!!
There is going to be a huge need for black tape to cover up all the logos and assorted gold bits so as not to attract the ne'er-do-wells on the streets of various European cities who want to pinch our stuff
Greg
MHD,
Well the D70 will bring you more happiness I think. The D2x is similar with my D2H (body look and some other stuff) and with higher MP than the D2H, but there's a premium add on to that and we here in Aussie market, won't see those toys at least another 9 months. I'm happy with my D2H atm and am waiting all the experts got and play around with it first, learn more from difference forums about its pros & con and put my hand on it later (around June 05). There's no rush about get it (D2x) once it released, I like the new glasses instead of. I've just got my D2H last June. My D70 last April and my D100 on last Dec. 02. The glasses will make a big changes in your daily photography hobby. Birddog114

Looks like the P&S Coolpix are the winners. Wise marketting move IMHO - caputre more of that market share.
CP8800 - 8MP, 10x zoom, VR! Great flagship "prosumer" to compete with the likes of Sony, Panasonic and Canon models. Edit: more info comes to light. The D-lightning nomenclature refs to the camera raising shadow areas aka. electronic fill flash effect while playing back images in camera.
300 VR lensHere's the preliminary guff on the 300mm f2.8 VR lens.

Gary,
Very tempting that baby (450mm on Nikon DSLR/2.8/VR) and all my TCs are OK as well, that mean with TC-14EII, it'll be 675mm and 900mm on TC-20II), with all the lost of 1 or 2 f stop. Santa will bring me one this Xmas if there's stock around, I perhaps ditch the back-ordered of the 200VR/2, its status is TBA. I'm will be on the line with NPA tonight, perhaps too early for them to predict any available stock, I'll wait until mid October to check it around. Birddog114

Birddog do you think you will get to play with one of these???
If so, fill me in on the goods please Cheers Ray >> All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism<<
I would like to know how this is done, with out exec noise being introduced into the image???? Cheers Ray >> All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism<<
Raydar,
Checked with NPA last night, I can place the order for the 300VR by the end of this month and they said ETA is TBA, same question and answer for the D2x. I'll keep you posted. I like to try the glass first, my favourite is long and fast lens, now it comes with VR, no more complaint, I guess. The D2x is little bit hesitation atm, I wait until all the Pro have and they post their impression, June or July next year is my aim. Because June is my birthday and ofcourse it's my excuse!!!!! Birddog114

From several online sources, it seems the D2X might be ready to ship for the new year, and (this is the main surprise), the F6 will be ready to ship in October!
I doubt Nikon's flagship will disappoint with image quality. I just hope the measurabators are somewhat kept at bay - over scrutinising a few reivew samples as being representative of all units or even generalise to the entire brand...
As far as I'm aware, yes.
My understanding is that noise in introduced as a product of the exposure time as it is exposed at the sensor. I believe that the sensor heats up during the exposure process and this leads to the noise, with, as extra sensitivity is dialled in to the sensor (higher ISO), more heat is generated, hence higher noise. But thus, for each exposure, you effectively start afresh. But I don't believe that's true of exposure, which still builds up for each individual exposure and thus you'll need to meter for the total (accumulated) exposure and divide by the number of exposures made. g.

Re# Noise
My experience about noise with my D2H: - Wrong exposure/ WB. I have had it for 3 months now and with the fast lens, right exposue, I didn't find anything wrong with it. I did test and also made mistake with lot of shooting in difference area. My conclusion is: noise is coming from the guy behind the camera!!! That why Nikon hasn't got any firmware U/G for the complaint noise in D2H. They have upgraded firmware for other stuff only. I'm happy with it and hopefully with my near future of the D2x Birddog114

Sold it and bought the D70 which actually is a better camera (4 years of advancement). I find the USB1.1 on the D70 to be adequate but would like to point out that USB2.0 is 480Mbps and firewire for cameras is still only 400Mbps. Cheers Chris

Yes it's correct, I think the next model (replacement of D70 or perhaps D200) will have the similar stuff. [quote="sirhc55"]CMOS sensor - I believe LBCAST was largely CMOS technology anyways (from reading the released technical materials available), but I guess Nikon wanted to shed the negative connotation it's had with the high noise issues so heavily reported of the D2H's sensor. [quote="sirhc55"]The GPS EXIF embedding function was available in the D1X IIRC, so that's not really a new feature is it?![quote="sirhc55"] Nah! It was out for a while, I tried it on a shooting trip on a chopper a while back in Tucson,Arizona, once we landed and we used data from the photos and compared with a map based on the GPS reading. [quote="sirhc55"]Unusual (IMHO) choice of going USB2, not firewire. I thought imaging professionals used sucky computers named after a common fruit - and firewire would make more sense...[quote="sirhc55"] Am still not understand while Nikon ditched the Firewire from the top range. There's a rage about it already with the spec. of the D2x. [quote="sirhc55"]As for the 300/2.8VR, it seems the VR function is no longer a small switch, but rather a large ring to click engage/disengage. It's a sexy piece of glass!![quote="sirhc55"] The small VR switch has a disadvantage for the big glass, and a big hand, you'll find it hard to walk your finger to find the switch at day or night, while your eye stuck on the viewfinder, the ring perhaps will bring more easy to play around with VR with a busy photogs. Hope I can get one soon and let members (who's loving long lens) to try it at one of our meet. Am still work harder on it atm. Well Canon's current flagship 1Ds has horrendous high ISO noise, but nobody seems to mention that - since these cameras are designed to compete with medium format work in studios where light is plentiful and usually used at lower ISO sensitivities.
I hope you're able to get your hands on a 300/VR too Birddog!
