Thanks Birdy. Sheesh, get busy for 24 hours and next thing you know there are 635 messages to wade through
Finally, I made the top of a list... The last list I was on was the most recent challenge and I was 71st on that list If I'm alone in a forest and my wife is not around to hear what I say, am I still wrong ??
I'll keep everyone posted once I have the confirmation from Maxwell.
Maxwell hasn't got any new stock since beginning of the year. Birddog114

I was getting a bit antsy, but I've been able to fondle a D200 in Adelaide and was able to test drive one in Melbourne.
As it turned out, the first shop had two downstairs in stock, but the other shop had a waiting list of pre-orders too. So, I've been lens shopping.... People put way too much rubbish in signature blocks.
sit tight whiz. i spoke to maxwells again today, had to put on the fake voice and all cos they're kinda catching on that i'm eagerly awaiting my D200. apparently they still can't count or read packing slips, left hand doesn't seem to know what the right hand is doing over at maxwells. would be nice if they told a little of that stuff called the truth rather than make up a new story every time i call. can't be too far off now i hope.
That's it!!!!!!! I'm happy to wait for the fresh new batches with perfectly cams. I hate to hear someone, who will call me and let me know they're having problems with their new toys. Even with Maxwell Service, you better get the one with more confident in the money you well spent. Birddog114

Birdy,
As much as I can't wait to get the D200, I fully agree with your comments. Best to wait and have one that is 100% rather than have problems down the track. Cheers Michael
With the odds fairly small of getting a banding camera, admitted problems that will be fixed for free and Melbourne Commonwealth games getting closer and closer, I'd take the chance with pretty much any new D200 at the moment...
My Precioussss! Ah, the bright one. It burnses us! Wicked evil banding. We hates it! We hates it!!!! People put way too much rubbish in signature blocks.
Spooky, I wish I can have them for all of you asap. I'm learning Japanese now Birddog114

Well, I've been told, but UNRELIABLE sources that there is an order for 2000 of which only about 100 or so is expected to turn up.
SO, I'm not expecting anything anytime soon... People put way too much rubbish in signature blocks.
I'm praying in Japanese! Birddog114

I find it funny how Nikon expect a 30% increase in DSLR sales yet they can't even cope with the current demands. They'll be losing sales if they're not careful, I know I'd be pissed off if I had my money on a preorder of a D200 for 4-6months.

I was expecting to be able to avoid the waiting period by going shopping for the D200 around May.... Looks like there still won't be many around by then at this rate!!
Does anyone know if there is anything fishy going on or can they simply not keep up with demand? Paul http://www.australiandigitalphotography.com

Hey kipper,
Calming down mate! and save some happiness for your coming trip. Problems arised since day 1 and they need to have the answer, when? No one can't tell us, what's behind? If you received your order of D200, and found out there's banding or other problems, are you happy? I'm not! It's ridiculous and annoyed everyone but what can we do. The only way is jump ship. Enough rant for the D200! who's the hell want to wait? and we didn't know what the real status is. I've received some infos from one of the trusted sources and insider: It'll be in Easter bag, but who knows, I trust when I see it delivered to my door from Maxwell. Nikon is not here and will they hear all your rant? Maxwell doesn't care coz they do not have stock and they can't do much about it. If it's something about the services in Maxwell Service Center, I'll have more proofs as adding fuel to the fire, but not this D200 story. If Nikon lost the entire Australian market it would most likely let them service the rest of the world a little better. Aust sales would be so small in comparison to USA. Poor old Maxwell’s are probably a pain in the ass to them. How can Nikon lose sales if they are running manufacturing at 100% capacity and have people on a waiting list. You can only lose sales when manufacturing drop behind and sales forecast are not met and the opposition picks up the void. That is when sales are lost. How many 70 200VR sales were lost . I’m on an 18 month waiting list for a car at present if I really want it I will wait if not some one else will move up the list my loss not the car manufacture as someone else will picked up my spot . By the time Nikon fill all their D200 orders the D200s will be announced and the waiting list starts all over again so dose the lusting. And Nikon get closer to their estimated 30% increase. LOZ...
The local Teds ? in Castle Hill NSW has one in the window for 3 weeks and it is for sale so what is problem
Don't think it's only Australia.
Was talking with a Pom today. He couldn't get one in England. Another guy off a cruise ship from a place I can't remember also came into the shop (Think it was the Camera house in amongst all the others in Melbourne) and tried to buy the display one there. (Which I was fondling for the second time) He was rather miffed that they wouldn't sell it. I'm starting to hunt around the place for other bits that I can stick on it while I wait. I know it's not your fault Birdy. These things happen. With my D70 out of action with a sticky mirror, I'm cameraless. I'm not mad. Just disappointed. I'm sure that I'll live. I seriously doubt that there will be a 200s. Just because ONE of Nikon's cameras out of their hundreds had an S update, doesn't suggest a trend at this point... People put way too much rubbish in signature blocks.
Umm, I can see a trend re "s" updates. D2H --> D2Hs D70 --> D70s D2X - too young for an update D50 - a reworked D70 ( a minus "s" if that makes sense ) So discounting the D50, 2 out of the last 3 releases have been updated with an "s" model and whose to say there won't be a D2Xs as a stopgap until the D3 series is ready. If I'm alone in a forest and my wife is not around to hear what I say, am I still wrong ??
Well, I've decided to wait for the next generation...
I'm pretty happy with the features of the D70, but would like greater resolution. Unfortunately 3872 x 2592 doesn't seem like a big improvement to me and doesn't cut it... I think I'll wait for the next quantum leap (c. 20 MegaPixels) and will fully enjoy my D70 in the meantime... Cheers, John

In the past week or so I have had similar thoughts re whether I should just stick with my D70 for a while longer... trouble is that I probably would then have to wait until the D200's successor, rather than the next cpl that come out, as I don't think I want an integrated grip.... but with the D200 coming out now, its follow-on model will likely be another 2+ years... not sure I can wait that long ... so that puts me back at the "may as well upgrade sooner rather than later" point.... *sigh*... dunno - very indecisive.... It's not a decision I have to make right away, I guess - can't get a D200 for love NOR money at the moment anyway!! Anyone else reconsidering an upgrade? Rae

resolution isn't the only thing that's superior in the d200. compared to my ole beloved D70 this baby feels more responsive, precise and intuitive. but is it worth twice the price of a D70? nah
D200, 12-24DX, 28-70/2.8, 80-200/2.8, 105M/2.8, SB800, Rollei 2.8F
If talking and comparing price of body to body = NO ($1300.00 vs $2600.00) Not worth it. and features to features (from one to other) = NO (Not much difference) Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
Btw Birdy, my comments weren't a dig at you, or Maxwells, or any of the stores around the world I know the supply issue is purely Nikons fault.
Out of interest though what was the body of the D70 worth when it was released? Darryl (aka Kipper)
Nikon D200
In AU$ and in Australia, it was in between $1300.00 - $1450.00 (Body only without kit lens) And the price of D200 (body only) is varied from $2500.00 - $2600.00 Other difference pricing of the D70, when it was announced and released was the big mark up from all the stores, coz it was in shortage at that time. The D200 is in shortage atm, but its pricing is firmly without any variation or big markup as the D70. Birddog114

Is your D70 currently holding you back, or limiting your photography ? If so, is it the camera that is doing so or your current compliment of lenses ? If it's the camera, then I think you should upgrade for sure...why be hindered by your tools. If it's the lenses, perhaps keep the D70 & invest in lenses that will help you out both now & in the future - when you do upgrade. The D200 may be faster & more responsive, but if you never push the D70 to it's limits, then the D200 is just overkill (IMHO). Of course, if you "really want" to upgrade to the newest Nikon has to offer, then this negates my entire theory.... Dave

Again, watch out:
At the time the D70 was released, our AU$ was very low, less than US$0.67, This factor is also another consideration of its pricing when it was born. Our Aussie dollar today is on the sliding scale (US$0.71), yes it will impact on all imported items and if it continues to heading South then we will see a high price tags on all other gears items. Perhaps the honeymoon is over. Birddog114

Did you know that "Quantum Leap" is by definition, the smallest leap that can be made? I don't think I'd bother with anything much bigger than 10 megapixels. I was quite happy with six. Given the limits of human vision and printing, it starts to smell suspiciously of marketing. ( As in, watch out, don't step in that marketing!) Besides, 20 megapixels will be only just over twice as good resolution as 4 megapixels anyway. I think we're off topic, so I'd best say something about the D200 being hard to get and why isn't this thread only for the people who've paid the deposit to post in. We're the only people it's relevant to. People put way too much rubbish in signature blocks.
Ditto, Similar thoughts here, as much as I want / need a second body, I suspect I will end up with a D70s as the net gain when I compare price for features does not do it for me. I can't help wondering what lens I would buy with the difference saved
Because of my remote location, distances I travel the dust & dirt etc, its making more sense to have a back up body to avoid disappointment on a trip. The largest pic I have ever had printed was A3, typically A4, so don't need the extra pixels, compatability with batteries is a +, also the uniformity with controls is a +. Another thing that has influenced my thinking is something Birdy said to BBJ when he he took that "Flying W" pic of Caparossi at the Phillip Island GP, "Why upgrade your body? you got the pic of the meeting!" Made sense to me! Nothing beats cubic inches, and I suspect nothing beats fast / quality glass! So that will be where my "hard earned" will go. Andyt
I'd think it would depend on what you want it for. Do you print photos around the 16x20" size? (most hobbyists don't print their photos) Do you shoot at high ISO, 800+? Do you use AIS glass? Higher res cameras tend to find faults in camera craft and cheaper glass. The first time my wife used our D2x in low light she had a lot more camera shake in her photos. Where as when she used a D70, she had none. Slight technique problems get microscoped. If you answered no to those three questions, then you might get more out of your photography with spending that money on some top shelf glass. Andrew
Canon make photocopiers and stick lenses on them....
I don't know about you guys, but to be perfectly honest, not all of my purchasing decisions are based on logic. Sometimes I just want a new model of something, or the latest thingy or whatever.
Of course, when it comes to photographic equipment, that can lead you down the path to impecuniosity with alarming speed My D70 isn't holding me back at all, but by crikey, a D200 would be fun Greg - - - - D200 etc

Thanks for your comments, Dave. I do agree.... My reason for considering an upgrade is purely situational - see my thread here... in short, my partner wants a dSLR of his own and would be happy to take over my D70 and put the purchase price towards my getting a D200 instead... a somewhat tempting offer... I've been fairly picky in my lense purchases so far - the "lowest quality" lense I have is probably the 18-70 kit lense that I got with the D70... so I don't think the lenses are holding me back... and as I said, the D70 isn't really, either (although there are a couple of features on the D200 which would be nifty...)... so no, it's not a case of NEED at all.... I do have a few (!!) lenses I am still lusting over so I am sure I could put the money to good use.... but there aren't really any lenses that I NEED, either... ... plus, there's another hard decision to be made there between the 28-70 and the 17-55... My main consideration re this body upgrade decision is whether I will be well and truly ready for an upgrade from the D70, well before the D200 replacement comes out... so I may end up getting a D200 in a year or so anyway... so therefore maybe I should just get it now and be done with it... Does this make ANY sense?? Sorry - probably just thinking out loud now. Sorry if this is too far OT and is a hijack. Plan to go in and have a play with a D200 if and when one comes in to the dealer here... perhaps that will crystallise my thoughts. Rae

cyanide,
Go for the 17-35 & 28-70/2.8, pls. don't look at the 17-55Dx. You'll be surprised with both. Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
Birdy, in many ways (apart from my wallet!!) that is my thinking, but I am also trying to get a better "walkaround" lense than the kit... and with those two I would be constantly torn between which to take...
The 17-55 is less range compared to the other two, but would eliminate the lense changes in a dusty environment... and the cost of those two vs just the 17-55 is a definite added factor... But as I said, this is a WHOLE new discussion which I will doubless bore you all with at some point in the future!! Next purchase (after the possible body issue) is the 85mm 1.4..... or a Noct if I find one.... or maybe a 28mm 1.4 if I was lucky enough to come across one... It's definitely a disease... Rae

Cyanide,
Maybe some kind of bonuses hit you with a nice windfall! Take it easy and you'll achieve all in the near future. Birddog114

Cyanide,
Trust me, if you're thinking of the 85/1.4, get it as soon as you can. I'm sure it'll be disappeared soon or it'll be at the high price tag. US stock maybe you can find few of them at B&H and others, but not many. Grey or import stock is becoming rare now. Birddog114
