There is a latin american dance show on sat and my parents bought the tickets a few weeks in advanced. On the back of the ticket it said no photography. I contacted marketing and customer service manager at the club and she said to ask the promoter of the show. Phone the promoter and he said that I can take photo but the no photography rule was from the club.

Hmmmmm..... All this conversation was verbal, but will it hold on the night. I really want to try the 70-200 VR on this event. Prob come early to the event and hope they dont stop me taking shots.

The rules are difference in between the promoter and the Club.
The promoter does not have the bouncer and the club has few of them and they're ready.
Your choice.

If you can arrive early enough to be able to dump the camera if you get turned down, I'd do that. The other approach would be to email/fax and try to get something in writing. Don't be surprised if the latter turns out to be too much hassle for the people you're asking though. I've had good luck both ways, as well as "on the door list" which is the best way if you can wangle it. But for just taking personal photos, I'd just rock up.

(edit) and if you can get photo permission at all, it's worth trying with whatever lens you can get in, I reckon. I did quite well with The Herd and a 50/1.4 despite not being allowed on stage or in the wings, and they wouldn't let me use the 70-200 because it was "too big".

Good wishlist Nito but perhaps you should focus on getting a 17-35 f/2.8 because finding an 18-35 f/2.8 will take a long time even if you had the money

My advice on this (and other events) is:

If you're unsure - don't.

It's sad but if they wanted to confiscate your beloved 70-200VR prior to entry , and the only choice was to not attend and go home (with cam and lens) or 'trust' the security doods - I know what I'd be doing.

Enjoy the latin American dancing without your cam.

It's sad that there are such grey areas when it comes to photographing 'events' and what is a 'professional camera' - my two cents worth.

I will take up the offer at a mini-meet . I so want to try that lens out and buy it. We just bought a new car so that lens purchase is for later in the year.

IF in doubt leave it at home.. I also think maybe the 50 1.8.. Or can you call the Club and ask them also??

I'd certainly persist, it might be a case they don't want a load of flash photography which can distract performers. I know at a ballet/dancing concert I use to help with at the end of each year there was a strict no flash photography rule as it distracted the girls while dancing (not that many people listened!).

I can report that I had no problems at the event.

There will be some photos posted later on, need to PP the shots. Overall the shooting conditions were not great.

Black backdrop with lots of different intensities of light confused the exposure system of the good old D70. Basically set the camera to underexpose to prevent unrecoverable highlights.

Motion of the dancing was very hard to capture and had to shoot at ISO800. It was a hit and miss affair, 1/3 of shots were deleted.

The lens performed really well. It was the perfect focal length because we were 10-15 m from the stage.

Only complaint was from a short guy behind me.
