camera weather covers

Hi Guys

Does anyone use camera covers to keep the elements off their camera body and lens while shooting.

If so any recommendations or advice?

I am especially looking for something to take on my trip to Antarctica but also for general use. I would like one suitable for the 70-200VR and/or a smaller lens.

Have seen a couple on the net but don't know what is the best way to go.

isn't some of the hi end nikon stuff weatherproof? i've used my canon gear in the rain no probs

The AquaTech stuff is very good (and they're in fact an Australian company) but it is fairly pricey.
Another option to consider is the Storm Jacket series.

Mind you, on the stuff I've seen of these Antarctica trips most people don't use anything like this. Keep in mind that snow is only wet when it melts: I've used D30 and 10D cameras in falling snow in Tasmania with no problems.
Certainly for example I don't use anything like that when on pelagic birding and whaling trips on the Southern Ocean. Even when the weather is wild and there's lots of salt water flying around (although if I had such a cover I might consider taking the camera out from under my raincoat more often, maybe not as those are the times I'm hanging on for dear life ).
I do carry a few garbage bags and sometimes put one over the camera+lens (with the lens tip poking through and the lens hood clamping down on the bag). But that's usually in circumstances such as shooting rainforest macros in the pouring rain.

Check out the options by all means. I'm just suggesting that you might not need them.

I bought some Kata gear from B&H, for the body covers and a couple of lens covers it came to under $100 Au.

I've used it in utterly pissing rain without any issues what so ever.

A previous visitor to Antarctica recommended the weather covers. I think they would probably come in handy in Patagonia as well.

a rubber band round the lens everything else is water proof.

remember to take silica gel to dry the camera after using it.

That looks very much like the Kata system I have. It works a treat, like I said, I used it in pissing rain (so heavy the camera could hardly focus through it) and the camera and lens (70-200 F/2. stayed dry as a bone. Can't fault it, and it folds away to next to nothing.

The ebay guy abvove also does a Canon option, it's under "Digital SLR" in his product list. He doesn't sell DSLR's, just the rain covers.
