Pbase or Smugmug

Postby makario on Fri Mar 24, 2006 1:52 pm

Hello Everyone,

I am looking at signing up for an online photo sharing website like Pbase or Smugmug and was hoping to make an informed decission based on your past experience with these 2 websites.

My primary requirements

1) easy of use and quick support, a bit of html customisation
2) loads of space
3) vaule for money
4) individual passwords protect individual albums
5) Stable provider
6) Quality printing service and post prints to Melbourne Aus
7) Fast downloads, I know that this is a function of the internet connection, I am more intrested in the website serving images quick and not being dependant on which side of the world I am in.
8) Upload tool will be handy as well...

... I hope such a site exists :D

I am not looking at hosting a domain and self managing a website yet, cause I want to spend more time clicking photos rather than bothering about mundane admin chores....

Thanks for your inputs.

Makario

I have been using smugmug for a year or so, very happy with it.

There is a forum called Digital Grin which has a direct involvement with smugmug and might be worth a look.

I would say that smugmug gets a yes on questions 1-5, don't know about 6, 7 OK and it has various means of uploading.

Makario

I concur with Greg's comments. So far as getting prints sent to Melbourne SmugMug charges for shipping via airmail letter at US$3.90 for up to 50 4x6 or for up to 10 10x15 prints. For the prints themselves pricing is here. I'm not certain (since I use SmugMug not PBase), but can't find anything from a quick look that says PBase allow prints.

When I first went through this same exercise I tried both (both have a 7 day free trial) and decided that, for me, SmugMug was better. I suggest you consider trying both also.

Hi Loz,

I actually have a free flickr account. This restricts me to only 3 albums which is very annoying. I am trying to juggle pics in flickr so that I can get around this. But would like to get a professional looking site hence looking at moving to smugmug/pbase.

I have just been throught the PBase / Smugmug thing as well. I choose Smugmug and am very happy so far.

If you decide to sign up with Smugmug make sure that you grab one of the discount codes from the bargains section. It will save you $5 and someone else on the forum $10

Interestingly I mentioned this originally in my post above, but then removed it since makario doesn't have access to the bargains section since he hasn't reached member status yet
