Filter thickness

Does the thickness of filters matter when using a 17-35 on a DX camera? I am thinking of stacking 2 filters.

I would think that the thickness of filters matters on ANY filter if you keep stacking them At some point, they will all start to intrude upon the FOV.

I've had reasonable success stacking three filters on my 18-70 at 18mm. Mind you, it was one 67mm UV Filter, 67-77mm Step up ring, 77mm ND Filter, 77mm Slim Circular Polariser. Minimal vignetting wide open, but generally very usable.

My Tokina 12-24 will JUST manage a 5mm thick filter without vignetting at 12mm.

i once stacked 2x ND64 filters and took a 10 minute exposure of a busy daylihgt street scene the end result ghost town all moving objects were rendered invisible - pretty cool to experiment like that

Yes, first 3mm as UV or neutral filter then 5mm standard.

What 17mm lens did you use?

He's talking about the 17-35, even the 17-55Dx is difference with the 17-35 at 17mm on DSLR.

That's what I mean, the 17-35 being"FF" it should be less affected by standard filters.

To be honest, on the 17-35 AF-S you can stack two 5mm filters without any vignetting @ 17mm, I have and played with it.

I put a 8mm thickness CPL filter on my 17-35 no problem, do not get any vignetting @ 17mm .
