Picture of the week, . April 2 2006

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

Picture of the week, . April 2 2006

Postby MHD on Tue Apr 04, 2006 11:52 am

What a great week for images, there is no other forum where so much displaying of photographic occurs on the face of the planet. The images this week were outstanding, from Willy's weird thing to Slider's Dragon fly. In the end though there was an image I just kept coming back to again and again, even though it was not quite in this week.

I picked this image for two reasons:
1) I like it, great atmosphere, framing/cropping and I love the pose of the figure
2) It's a bloody hard thing to do. Picking the exposure (and levels in PP) such that you get some detail but controlling the blowout of the direct reflection

I Also love the diffuse golden glow over the hills

Congratulations Sheila Smart!

Sheila - a stunning image and as Scott has said, well composed and judged with your framing and managing the potential blowout of the sun. This is an image that I think many people could easily spend a long time pondering.

Good choice Scott!

Nice one, SS!!

I thought this image was a stunner when I first saw it. Really like the squarish crop, even though I am a card carrying member of the Nerds Who Love Widescreen Too Much Support Group. The lighting is Just Right, and the glow around the person's head is perfect.

Well done :)

Can she go for a hattrick next week???

Congratulations.

Allthough a stricking image as is, I feel if you were to have zoomed a little to tighten the frame by croping some more off a the sides it would give it that edge.

Oh my heck, what's gobsmacked?

Great shot Sheila. This is where talent is truly evident; no matter what your shooting with the proof is in the image. You've got the right bone or muscle or sinew or heart that helps you frame just the right shot - we all think you're amazing. BTW, my wife is a big, big fan; me too.

Congratulations; now go for a three-peat.

A very nice picture Sheila... Nice tones...

Not wishing to detract from that I have to pose a question to Scott...
This pic was submitted before the previous POTW! When does the week from POTW actually start and end???

You are right John,
Sheila's image did fall outside the 'week'. However a little bit of poetic justice was used. This was discussed between the mods and none of us had any concerns with this. One of the great things about POTW is the person's choice each week is entirely that - for whatever reason etc.

Fair enough... but I'm still confused... Is "the week" Mon-Sun? or Tue-Mon? Not that I'm that bothered... just confused... :-)

The week in "Pic of the week" does not refer to the posting week, although it often does. It refers to the fact the image is highlighted for a week..

It was a tough descision, I like to reward to images posted within the week, but I found Shelia's image so compelling I could not go past it.

The Sticky in the Picture of the Week section wrote:Each week one of the moderators will select an image that will become our Picture Of The Week.

The selection criteria are very simple: whatever takes that moderator's fancy.

Please feel free to discuss the image, and whether or not you agree with the moderator's selection, within this section. You are not free to discuss the selection process, which is exactly as noted above: whatever takes that moderator's fancy.

Selection of any image as PotW does not suggest that it was the best image, technically or otherwise, posted during any particular period. It implies - and it means - nothing more that a moderator liked that photo the most, this week, for whatever reason.

If you do happen to like the moderator's selection, that's great, say so, and say why. And if you don't like the moderator's selection, that is fine too: say so, and and tell us why.

In short, we are not bound by anything whatsoever, the picture could (in theory) have been posted a year ago. Woohoo.

Sheila, this image is excellent, as was the image last week and the one of the kayaks on the beach a few weeks ago. Talk about raising the bar.
