Help needed on Sydney locationThis thread on DPreview caught my attention just now,
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=17921237 Some chap is trying to locate a part of Sydney from a piccie taken 37 years ago so he can visit it. The spot has some sentimental value to him as it is a photo of his deceased father and he wants to visit the same spot. My thoughts are the Eastern suburbs, maybe Coogee of south of Bondi, but i havent been in that area for about 15 years. Any takers??? Steve.

Hmm tough one, I don't know Sydney well but nothing stands out as a good landmark to get ones bearings.
Since the photo was taken circa 1969, it would have to be in the eastern suburbs somewhere. Other old areas of Sydney are too flat or when less developed then. If you assume that the photo was taken in the late afternoon (judging by the shadow length), then we are looking east which means it may be a little more inland, perhaps Kingsford or Kensington. They fit the bill regarding steep streets.
Is it possible that one of the large buildings in the background is the UNSW (most of the buildings there are post 1970) and the other Prince of Wales hospital?? If I'm alone in a forest and my wife is not around to hear what I say, am I still wrong ??
I thought it might be electrical engineering which is one ofthe oldest buildings there. If I'm alone in a forest and my wife is not around to hear what I say, am I still wrong ??
killa... Ask him to post a high-res scan of the print and I think we might be able to solve this...
I'd ask myself, but i can't remember my dpreview login details... Cheers, John

I'm actually thinking Turella/Marrackville - it looks more like the south side of marrickville to me, possible over the hill but maybe not. But I wasn't in Sydney 10 years ago, let alone 35.

have bicycle, will go to Critical Mass
Actually I grew up in Coogee, and went to the local primary school there. This looks very familiar. I'm guessing Carrington rd, Melody or Mount Sts. Looking North-West, which would make this an early morning shot. I think the buildings in the background were part of the hospital, not the uni.

Just what do you think you're doing Dave?
I've sent the photo on to a mate of mine who lives in South Coogee and works at UNSW and Prince of Wales. If he is able to help I'll let you know
Is the background the sky, or the Pacific?
The hill isn't steep enough to be Arden St, and if it was, the ocean/beach would be in clear view. While I agree that it could be in the Cooggee/Randwick area, I'm also open to North Bondi at the cusp of Rose Bay, where it's slightly elevated, looking a little towards the south west, with somewhere like Ramsgate Ave in the immediate background. The area east of Anzac Parade and north of Rainbow St in Randwick/Kingsford also looks a possibility, but I don't think that this is hilly enough either. g.

Much to my wife's dismay, I had a good drive around Coogee today and couldn't find any street that looked like a likely candidate... I checked out the streets that Suzanne recommended and while they were similar, they didn't have the same sort of view as that in the image...
I'm starting to think that it is more inland... Cheers, John

Randwick perhaps! The guy who's original thread started this has not replied to his thread yet.
Steve.

Well..its not much..but here's what my mate who lives in Coogee says
>>Hmmm, not sure about where that is, but don't think that is POWH in the background. It seems in the wrong place on the hill. I don't think you get a view of it from Carrington Road either. Does look Eastern Suburbs,I must say. I will show it around and keep my eyes open.<<
Sorry to bring up an old thread but I drove by those buildings in the background on sat. The large building in the background is just north of moore park heading. You can see them if you head up ANZAC parade and it on the left hand side if you head towards the ED or oxford st from kensington.
Not being alive when the photo was taken I won't hazard a guess. But maybe he should ask this guy...
