The new firmware thread and Q for Gary/NNNNsic

Postby atencati on Wed Jan 05, 2005 7:25 am

Wow, I just noticed the Firmware thread has overwhelmed the long running HKSupplies thread as the mos viewd topic. And all in about 10 days....interesting.

Hey guys, great job with the forum. Is there a way to extend the recent topics menu to infinity or 100 or so threads? I know I would find it helpful to keep up. Thanks again!!!!!

 I have asked for this also

I am finding it very difficult to kepe up with the forum unless you are logged on 24 x 7

The restriction was a very valid one though. Gary pointed out to me that if the top section is extended then the actual forums won't be displayed until half way down the page (or something similar) making it harder to browse the forums. I agree with him.

There is a link on the right hand side "View posts since last visit", maybe this would be more helpful?

I'm looking into a way to add a search new posts option similar to other boards where you can just find all the threads with posts you haven't seen yet.

The problem with this very useful option is that threads you don't get to disappear from this list when you log off and log back on later.

As a variation on atencati's suggestion, maybe we could have another link to a full Recent topics listing (or if not full, maybe 100 or something)

It would also be helpful to be able to return to this list from the thread instead of returning to the forum index. Or to be able to return to whatever list you came from.

I was thinking make the recent topics title a link to a page with last 100 or so. ?? Does that work, I'm not up on the forum side of html / php BB

Hi Andy

Actually it has gone berko (mad) in the last 4 days - but my question here is - has anyone else noticed a slowing down of this site with all of the hits? I am running broadband and last night it was like being on dial-up. Or is it just me getting older by the day

The change to extend the recent posts section is easy, but it raises the question of where to stop it.

As has been pointed out, any addition here imposes a cost in terms of where the actual forums listing starts, and I settled on 8 as a reasonable compromise. Bumping it to 10 wouldn't hurt too much, but anything beyond that I think would be to the detriment of the forums in general.

Leigh's said that he's looking for a few other things, and I have some references that he's sent me that I need to look at next week, once I get back to civilisation.

or Sydney. :)

I'll switch the connection through to the higher bandwidth connection next week as well.

Thanx for letting me know.

I'm with Greg. I often have 10 minutes to pop in for a look. If I use the View post since last visit option but don't get trough all the posts, I loose them when I next log in.

Some sites have a chronological most recent posts page with an option to chose posts for the last N days. This would be very useful.

Broad what??? No such thing in my area. Dialup is it, and I have really noticed a performance hit.

Waiting, waiting, waiting....

Not complaining, I am happy to be able to spend time in this forum.

Cheers
