AE/AF Lock Settings

I was viewing a site on the D70; it stated the following in regards to AE/AF Lock:

Exposure and Focus lock should not be linked. They have nothing to do with each other - the point that you meter off is most likely not to be the same point you are focusing on. You really don't want to limit yourself by having the AE Lock button to also be your Focus Lock. Either use the AE/AF Lock button as an AE Lock .. or .. an AF Lock, but not both at the same time.

Would be interested to know members settings...

I have mine set to AF lock, if I want AE Lock I'll hold the shutter release button (or reprogram the AE/AF button if I'm going to do it more than once).

G'day,
When using the kit lens (18-70DX), I use the AE lock button for focus so I can focus on what-ever I want and then the shutter to meter exposure (which is regularly a different spot altogether which would have a different focus point)...

When using the VR zoom though I swap them around, AE button for exposure and shutter for focus as I want the VR to settle down and be ready for when I want to shoot, as I think the VR is "hard-coded" (?) to the shutter button, so if the subject is not fast moving that seems to give VR more time to "lock"...

I'll have to play more though to get used to the effects of VR and how to drive it best...

I put AE (sorry, was this a secret ballot?!!!!) but having said that I don't think I've EVER used it!! I shoot about 99.9% in Manual mode so don't get much use out of AE!

Oh yeah.... I forgot about "auto" exposure in manual mode... I spose I'm probably only doing the exposure thang for S or A modes...

I certainly don't link them either way, that would seem to restrict you in what you can do...

Didn't notice the ballot (ooops) but now dunno because I swap 'em around for different purposes... Can I have one of each please?

Where's the option for FV lock?

Mine's mainly on AE lock/hold.

Usually use the Exposure lock, I use the shutter release to lock focus.

I like the default setting, because that way you've got the best of both worlds. If you want to link your focus and exposure zone to the same point, press the button with your thumb, or if you want separate focus and exposure zones, half-press the release button on your focus point, leave it half pressed, move to your exposure point, press the AEL/AFL button and you've locked the focus and exposure to different points. Works for me... (well sometimes)
Having said that, I use manual exposure pretty much exclusively, so normally I'm only thinking about focus anyway because I've already set the exposure.

Also, in default mode, pushing the button allows you to take a shot with manual (or no) focus, if for some reason you can't get an autofocus.

AE Lock and Hold for Panoramic work.

FV Lock the rest of the time (FV Lock wasn't an option in voting)

AE Lock. Shutter release An the 70-200 has focus lock buttons on the barrel (although a little too far towards the end of the lens)

FV Lock. I shoot in manual 99% of the time. BTW, release button is set to hold focus only.
