This has always been my argument! You only have to look at what the Poms pay for petrol (and they have North Sea Oil) - $2.40 a litre when we were there in July. I, for one, cannot complain about the price of fuel in Oz when I drive a 3.5 litre Mitsubishi Verada. And my husband drives a Commodore "Dinasaur" of 3.8 litres. We bought these vehicles when petrol was 60 cents a litre (ah, those were the days!). This current "crisis" may force car makers to stop making these huge engines in heavy cars. We learned nothing from the energy crisis in the seventies (and the Americans learned even less). My next car will be 1.6 litres. Anyone wanna buy a Verada!! We were in Paris last year and the most popular vehicles were scooters and the Smart car. We rented a small Opel in Calais and left it in the underground car park for three days. Driving in Paris is not for the faint hearted

Get a Vespa scooter! less than 10 bucks for a week or more in travelling and get heap of milage! good for around town.
I got rid of my Mitsubishi Pajero 3.5L and now switching to the Nissan Patrol 3.0 TDi. for my long range travelling. Birddog114

Both modes of transport I see as problematic. The Vespa can be fun, but you have to contend with all of the other drivers, most of whom have yet to attend their Vespa-awareness courses. Of course, of you're driving in Genova, then you really need to actively take steps to avoid hitting them, because there are just so many. Sounds like a huge swarm of bees. While the diesel uses less fuel, for some reason, the fool companies here (named for how they treat their customers) feel a need to rip off their customers at every possible turn. Not only do fuel costs increase as soon as there's a whiff of a price rise in overeas supplies or a change in the exchange rate (why do they not go down as quickly? And why is it that the fuel in the ground at your local, there since Monday, suddenly costs $0.15/litre more today?) but diesel fuel - cheaper to produce and about half the price of gasoline elsewhere in the world - is more expensive to purcahse here. Literally, highway robbery. g.

Well, if the price of petrol rises @$2.00/ litre, surely, more scooter will be on the road.

Ah! My scooter days. Back in the good old days of Mods and Rockers (in the UK) I had a Lambretta complete with whip antenna and foxtail
The only problem I had with scooters was constantly falling off when zooming round corners. It reached the point that when people rushed to me to ask if I was OK my stock reply was ”I’m fine, I do this all the time” Chris

Ummm.... No. What we will see is people paying more for fuel and government and oil companies extracting more money from road users. People will continue to drive their 2.5t behemoths on city streets, they will continue to complain, but they will not change their petrol guzzling habits. Meanwhile oil companies and government are laughing their greedy little heads off. Cheers

It'd be nice if the PT system in Australia was a lot more decent like in our neighbouring countries. It's all a scam (All the way to the top) to drain more $$$ from us. Hassy, Leica, Nikon, iPhone

Yes, we are getting more scooter riders and motorcyclists on the road because of the rising fuel price. Good for me as I get more work (part-time) training them for Q Ride. Fuel will continue to rise in price over the longer term as oil is a finite resource. Iam by no means a greeny but the price rises will have the effect of making alternative fuels more attractive and turning people to motorcycling. Both not a bad thing in my books. However, I do currently hurt at the bowser because my monthly fuel bill has cut my bottom line quite significantly over the last couple of years. I now just have to work out how to deliver 2,500 loaves of bread on my motorcycle every day. Craig Craig

The obvious solution to the current petrol pricing is simple:
Ride yer bike! Quite a high percentage of trips- to pick up the mail, buy a couple of litres of milk, but the paper etc could be (should be!) done just as easily by bicycle as by car or motorcycle, for many people who live in a city or town... with no usage of petroleum products. You might even find it helping reduce your waistline in the process. I rode to work, and home 5 days later, last week, its 235km from here. Whilst I realise that is way beyond most people, a 5km ride to the shops is easy. I'm certainly planning to ride to work a lot more frequently as the price of petrol rises, even though a drive a reasonably economical 4cylinder car. Gordon D70, D200, CP5700
I started riding my bike when I moved closer to work (15kms as opposed to 30kms). Only thing about riding the bike is I have to watch out for disgruntled drivers who have no idea how to drive

yea, far too many of them around, I've had a few extremely close calls, mostly with large trucks. The common theme is that if you are consuming petroleum to get where you are going, you do not want to be delayed even 5 seconds by a cyclist.

I am glad that I sold my petrol car for a diesel. The fuel eco is top notch (av 7L/100km in heavy to medium traffic) and its only a few more cents more than premium unleaded.
I am afraid high prices are hear to stay. Which will only slightly change my driving habits. Less coffee more petrol now.

You need to buy a farm, and then you can also buy cheap diesel for your farm implements, like your tractors, and such. And your 4WD, and your Golf TDi. And your diesel powered yacht. g.

It works both ways... I was sitting stationary at traffic lights a couple of days ago when a cyclist decided he was going to ride down the middle of 2 lanes of traffic (in the opposite direction)... He managed to misjudge it and clipped my wing mirror and then fell against my car... No scratches luckily... And then there was the other one this morning who tried to overtake me on the left when I was turning left at a junction... Luckily (for him) I lived in Holland for a long while and therefore have an inbuilt reflex reaction to look over my shoulder before turning a corner... Cheers, John

Birdy you have good taste I hope you don't have to wait for yours as long as I do. It is a bit like a d200 when the order was placed I was told 2-3 months that time has now stretched out to mid December if I’m lucky LOz
I do. I've been saving up for a car but I never seem to have enough money, or disposable income for that matter. At the current rate I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford one  Maybe if I stopped buying bikes and cameras and computers.
Unfortunately I've had two major crashes in about 25 years of biking everywhere, and one of them was late last year. Which is a bit of a bugger really, I'm still suffering (broken collarbone). http://www.moz.net.nz

I hear ya, this is the main reason I wont get a push-bike and am still thinking very hard as to whether I should get another motorbike. I sold mine (motorbike) within 3 months of shifting to AKL. I got sick of almost getting wiped out all the time by tincan's. I think my record one morning was 5 'shit that was close' incidents. All of them were tossers trying to use my gap in the traffic (right turns to where I was, u-turns from my left, merging etc). 2 Rules of thumb. 1. Treat every motorist as though they are out to kill you (coz they are) 2. Look any car driver who is turning right across you in the eye!! Smile; it makes people wonder what you have been up to.
Both the interior and exterior style is fine for the new golf. The turbo diesel has lots of grunt but is noiser than a petrol engine when the windows are down. Up, it slightly more noise but it is not very bad. 6 speed dsg isnt the smoothest auto. But then again it is not an auto. Overall I like the new car. And its not just for fuel eco.
