The fact is that appearance matters. If I drive my Charade on the road, I frequently experience road rage and bullying. If I drive my other European brand car on the road, I rarely experience these things.

People think a lot of stupid things about a whole range of subjects. Should we pander to everyone's whims? The fact is that adjusting your appearance to suit someone else's incorrect assumptions, whether it's your car, your clothes, or your camera gear that you're changing, merely encourages these irrational prejudices, when you should be letting people know just how wrong they are.

The vest sounds like a great idea for a less money than a second body. Definitely worth it even with a second body. Instantly recognisable, pro look and a bit of advertising space. As a secondary consideration it might be handy for stashing gear comfortably.

As to the idea of a non working body... well, I'll keep my opinion on that to myself.

I think Wendell has a great idea - it's elegant and expedient. He could either sit there and try to educate some bouncer for half an hour, or he could carry an extra piece of plastic and be let in without any hassle.

dont know about cheaper, i havent seen a decent vest for less than 100 bucks.
Given the choice you'll get more use from a 100$ vest than 100$ stuffed camera.

Thankyou people for knocking me around and allowing me to realise some things but i think your a little i'll informed so i'll clear things up

I have actually been working for a photo press agency(after business hours) for the last month, i don't need to do the hard yards anymore trying to get into events via, it's all pre-organised by the agency and i'm accredited, they just tell me whats on and where to go.

when an event happens the pr agencies send out media calls sometimes too many press photographers turn up usually at fashion events everyone wants to cover them. So everyone rocks up from agencies like Icon, Snapper, Wire image, getty images, and all the regular press core rock up to the door. The pr people sometimes manage the media and say o.k enough is enough and they start sifting, sometimes the door person is responsible for the executive decision because the pr people are busy somewhere else and in this particular case they are uninformed and decide who gets in at face value, regardless of a door list sometimes this list is not present or not updated, some accreditation to events is done last minute and sometimes doorlists are not complete, in cases like that i am instructed to 'Wing It'(use my charm and wits to get in). In 1 particular case i was just standing next to a guy with two bodies and in a crunch the door person allowed the person with 2 cameras in over me.

now if i were to be a purist photographer i would say the hell with this crap, spit on the road and leave, but i have a job to do and i have to do what is necessary to get access at times where things go haywire as explained above.

If someone did question me about the broken camera i would just say 'i'm having probs with it' and really i only need it at the door after i get in i can dump it back in my bag, it's just an extra key

When finances allow i will get another body but right now a cheap fast solution

At 90% of the events i cover i have no probs getting in my name is at the door or they know me etc i don't need 2 cameras and i can turn up in last years fashionable shorts with a stupid pink hat on and no one cares.

but for the remaining 10% of events where i need to 'wing it' a 2nd body will help me, it's that simple - dress to impress

Nothing new, exciting, different, startling or unusual here, my friend. They always retain the right the permit or refuse entry to whomever they like, and for whatever reason they wish.

Whether I agree with Wendell or not is really a moot point. He has made a decision based on some experience. Right or wrong it's his decision and I have to respect that. It's great that we can give advice from our different sets of experience (like get a vest or a functioning second body) and that's well and good, but there is no point in bagging him for making this particular decision since he has more info than any of us do since he's been in these particular situations. While it does seem a strange solution I say go for it Wendell, but the vest idea ain't bad either.

If i had 2 cameras i would be on par then i could 'wing it' to get in instead of the other guy with 2 cameras i don't need 3 cameras

regarding the vest i don't see that look on me usually i don't like wearing my big lowepro bag as well it makes me look like a turtle

i wear nicely tailored outfts so any kind of vest wouldn't look too good on me.

now most other photogs on the social circuit dont carry any large bags they just have two cameras and to me they look pretty slimline

Perhaps I should have said "Second working body". I would not even entertain the idea of carrying a paperweight around with me.... certainly not for appearance. Maybe I should have added that I think the camera body should be fully compatible with (if it were me) existing gear. That would include G lenses (if I used them - I generally don't) and i-TTL flash system - that sort of narrows it down to something like five DSLRs and one film SLR. Even SH, all would cost more than a new vest.

It is funny - as soon as I carry a second body it feels dramatically different.

With a second body I have noticed people with only one get pushed back by security and leave me alone. This happened blantantly at Jazz in the Domain early in the year.

If the camera around your neck is broken, it may have broken that night? Who is to know you brought it broken?

Another idea is to offer James $10 for his old Minolta. Quite heavy, metal, and actually works... Even has an old roll of BnW film in it that was partially spent then forgotten!

Aint no surprises there either. Appearences are everything. And if it means getting a job by having two camera bodies then so be it.

Personally I would buy a working one, but that isn't always feasible (besides I now have two bodies ).
