shooting RAW + Jpeg

had lots of opportunity to figure this out
but for some reason never did
if i shoot RAW and jpeg fine on a d2x does it slow down the capacity to write images to the buffer then on the card

if so by how much, does it slow down the wite speed significantly?

in jpeg mode fine i can get at least 10 shots in burst mode on the d2x untill the buffer gets a little slow

as the D70 only does RAW + Basic JPEG I can't really say much about RAW + JPEG Fine in speed terms. I don't really notice too much of a difference, if anything.

RAW + JPEG shouldn't impact on the capacity of the buffer, as the capture buffer is holding data from the sensor from which then a RAW file is written to CF (and processed again for JPEG output - so one source, two outputs). The impact on buffer performance is most likely going to be in time to clear the buffer contents to CF. I don't have my D70 with me right now so I cant really verify this (however, the D2x has a stack of processing power on board and you probably wouldn't notice anyway - Birddog will probably answer this)

Just as a side note, I'm interested in why you want to use RAW+JPEG fine?
The only time I use RAW+JPEG Basic is if I'm going to be processing a large number of burst shots on a slow system - as the file names match, I just go through the small JPEG's first to figure out which files are keepers and toss/keep the matching .NEF file.

I have some clients who want images right after the show
so i can dump my jpegs on my laptop burn cd give to client


i want to keep my raw files so i can perfect them later
for my own purposes

Thought that might be the case. Sounds like you'll need a fair stack of CF cards though

While I can't answer your question regarding the speed question, might I suggest that, for your clients' CDs, you prepare slideshows for them?

That may help protect your IP in the images shot, in case that becomes an issue.

don't need to worry about copyright it's all pre-organized it's just for press with a usage time limit
later when i perect the raw images i may use them in my portfolio or book
there should be no issues with copyright i maintian original IP
