Just got home from PICA

Postby Kellogs on Fri Apr 28, 2006 9:42 pm

Just a quick note on PICA………..

I have just got home (Canberra) after leaving at 7:00am this morning and I don’t know whether it was just me but I found it a little disappointing compared with Brisbane last year!!! It seemed very much aimed at the retail market. And Nikon’s stand (pro area) was much smaller (and less busy) than last year. Still plenty of lenses to play around with though. I also missed the AIPP judging and the ADOBE sessions – but that was my own fault. And if you are in the market for getting some digital mag style albums printed, PICA is where you need to go!!!! There were HEAPS of them!!!

Don’t get me wrong it was still worth the drive but I was hoping to come home with a little more. Did pick myself up a bargain though – a WACOM graphire tablet for $100!!!!

I will be interested to hear other people’s experiences.

I went along too today Kellogs, and whilst I wasn't completely dissapointed, more embarrassed by the size of Nikon (Maxwell's) stand compared to that of it's biggest competitor Canon.

You are right, it was definately aimed more at the retail market. We ducked into one of the PS tutorials which was ok, but the lack of signage to get to the destination of the tute was pretty poor. Loads of gadgets to look at, and as Kellogs said if you are in the wedding business and are looking for a new or change of album designer, look no further. I have come away from PICA with a feeling of 'yes it was worth it'.

Asked a few questions to the Maxwell staff about the reasons behind the shortage of D200's in the country/world and got the usual 'they didn't expect it to be as popular as they thought' type of response. supply/demand kinda thing.

It was quite amusing, as there were MANY people hovering around the D200 waiting to ask the same question 'when can I get one'. The reply - 'you should be able to walk into any shop around July and take one off the shelf'. Some shipments (to deal with back orders) are starting to come in in May. To Maxwell's credit, the sales guys (and girls) were all pretty helpful and looked well groomed and professional, probably more so than their competitors.

I missed the AIPP sessions too, I might return on Sunday if time permits. You always come away (well I do) from these things thinking, 'doh, I should've asked this or that'.

In summary - I will go again next year, for sure. Have fun tomorrow ppls!

Next year will be at Brisbane.

Kellog,
I had one and my wife use it as a cutting board when she wants to chop the ox tails or ox bones

Hey Geoff,
I have been to the AIPP judging before.
All I can say is you didn't miss much, they are quite boring.
Unless of course you have some of your work in there.

I was there too today...said hello to Geoff

Nothing special, same as the last time when it was in Sydney.

Only thing I enjoy was playing with the "Lensbaby2"

I don't think it's on on Monday.

Regardless, I'm interested to see if they'll have the Graphire for $100 when I go.

I have no money, but that might be worth spending what little of my money I have.

What model Graphire?

And in response to when people will be there... Dad & I will be there from around 1... provided Dad can wake me up in the morning.

Fab,

Was there something in this thread that is not clear?

If I'm starting to sound a little bit peeved, it's because this is the third time this week that I've answered this exact same question, and I'm beginning to wonder why people are failing to look for the answers to these questions. Are the search links not big enough? Is the thread, which, oddly enough, is listed under "Sydney" because it pertains to Sydney, less than obvious, despite it sitting just 5 items from the top of the page?

And trhe thread's been there for a month, and bookings for PIW have been open for about three months or so, so it's not as if there's not been enough time for people to get their acts together.

Yes, I'm more than a bit peeved!

On Monday there is a special professional photographer's day, a seminar with Michael Coyne.

It's up to you!
I'm not!

You are right, I've received your email but I was just wondering if wait people outside and where, or go in by myself
That was not clear to me, but it's probably me!
Anyway
I'll be there.

I got one too! Couldn't leave the show without a toy, would've preferred an Intuos but hey $100 you can't go wrong, especially on a cost vs. usage ratio, for me anyway.

Other than that I thought the show was boring as batshit, but then again I'm not a tradie, I think it was more trade oriented.

Was hoping the Sandisk magician would magically grant everyone in the crowd a card, it was not to be.
