I was under the assumption that the 200-400 was the Holy Trinity of Nikon lenses...

No, that's the Holy Grail.
The Holy Trinity, in fact, is (IMHO) the 12-24 + 24-120 + 80-400 which leaves no tern unstoned.
I know that many prefer the 70-200, but that simply doesn't carry the reach that I need.
Mike, welcome to the forum. Sit down, pull up a chair, put on some good Chicago Blues (I may take in a San Diego Jam session tonight) and tell us about yourself and your photographic exploits and endeavours.

SB800 is next. It's a little bit cheaper than the 70-200VR and 1.7TC I lust after...
Cheers

I really want a new lens, probably a Nikon 24-200g as a walkaround lens, although a 50mm 1.4 would be great for experimentation/portraits.
However, if I am honest I reckon a lightish tripod is what I really will buy first. I am thinking of heading to Sydney for Australia day, but I know my credit card wants me to stay clear of Birddog.

You may be ok there Skyva - I don't think Birddog accepts credit cards, which for me is a VERY good thing

Christiand, I have to pre-order it for you, do you wnt your name on the waiting list?
70-300 VR??? I haven't seen this yet, would have held off on the 70-200....I think that is a Thom Hogan Wish Lens.
Next up, TC 17e II, 12-24, tripod, monopod, 200-400 VR (after I sell my firstborn of course!), another SB800 or 600, anothr D70 or D2X

Andy,
It's a nice gem!
I got the email from our supplier about the confirmation of order and price for my 300VR/ 2.8, it's US$5150.00 shipped and ETA is beginning of March.
Grab it at that price, oh no! you have to add CA sales tax on top then it's over 5K, i think it's demo stock as well.
Brand new is over 5K, get someone out of CA buy it and ship back to you.
