Nikon glass on Canon 5D

Postby padey on Sat May 06, 2006 10:22 am

Hi guys,

My partner has two 5D's. And he is thinking of buying the nikon-to-canon lens adapter so he can use some of my glass.

I'm just wondering if the 28mm f1.4 will work on a 5D? I hear that the larger mirror in the 5D might hit the rear element of some Nikon glass. And the 28mm f1.4 rear element does protrude a little.

Andrew,

I think that, with the exception of a couple of very specialised lenses (6mm for instance) all non-DX glass should work just fine.

I don't think that the 5D mirror moves forward during its travel, and non-DX glass has to work with Nikon film bodies which, too, will have a larger mirror, so while I'm not certain, I think it should be ok.

That said, he's going to lose auto everything - focus, exposure, the lot - so the only thing he "gains" is the ability to use Nikkor glass, which, while good, isn't really going to be a significant gain considering what he's not going to get.

I would think that better value - and usability - would be obtained by just getting the equivalent Canon glass. Image quality would certainly be comparable, and there's no loss in functionality.

Wouldn't an adapter push the lens out further from the body and make what you have heard utter garbage?
