Nice shots Chris, doesnt seem much distortion at the wide end (joking as if I could tell in that shot) must be because you made the same call as me on the 12-24 front.

There is no shortage of quality in your Sigma 12-24, as demonstrated in this and your other posts.

Speaking of W/A photography generally (not lenses specifically) do you find that you almost need a different mind-set using W/A lenses?

Maybe it's just me, but I have always felt that I have to get into W/A mode. Today, for example, I went out with just my D70 & the 12-24. No camera bag. In fact, I had to buy the CPF at a camera store just before using it.

I find that if I have W/A lens just as part of my kit, I don't seem to find many W/A opportunities. Obviously, the photo ops don't simply disappear - it is all in attitude.

I love unusual perspective shots - that's why I find W/A so appealing - but I can't say that it comes naturally to me.

What are the thoughts of other photographers here?

Absolutely spot on with your assessment cricketfan - I just love the opportunites that WA gives - I look at everything as a different perspective with this lens and the lens has only come off the camera in the past week to do work pics.

You only have to look thru the viewfinder to see another world and this weekend coming I am going to try and get some more abstracts.

Cricketfan, I know what you mean. When I had a 20mm (still do, just looks 30mm) I would mainly use it for landscapes and otherwise only occasionaly pull it out of the bag. Your mindset idea is spot on, I am taking the 12-24 to Thailand and intend to spend whole days with it. Your shots from this morning look great.

Re the two lenses, I think they are both compromises either side of a fence, just depends which side of the fence you spend more time on. Mine was easy, I take property shots so less distortion is better. Not so easy for others making the choice

Yes, you are right. Most of my W/A shots are landscapes - a bit of distortion is not usually too much of a prob. I also wanted to make sure that I could mount a CPF, so that confirmed Nikon for me.
But the quality of the shots I've seen (on this and other sites) from the Sigma can't be denied IMHO.
