Hold the ring and try to push or pull in.
Push the ring out, you'll see AF and pull it in, it's Manual. Birddog114

The lens has an apeture ring but nothing to do with the AF or MF, you need to push the ring. Birddog114

Forget about AF on this lens, toooooooooooooo slooooooooooooow! It's the nature of macro lens, nothing wrong with it. Use MF whenever you want to achieve good macro capture. Birddog114

yeah, ill agree with birdy, ive got the 90mm tamron.. and on my d70.. its useless as a AF lens.. it searches constantly, even when theres an easily focusable object infront of the lens... you'll get better images by manual focusing the lens and you'll be able to focus on what you want inframe and not on what the lens wants to focus on
Tim p.s. this lens sings at f22 and above.. you'll need ur flash on for this.. so if ur using the onboard flash, make sure the lens hood isnt on the lens and hopefully, you wont get any shadow D70 - D200/MBD200 Coming soon - Too Much Gear, Not Enough Talent

Limit switchIt's definitely a slow focuser but if you judiciously use the limit switch to constrain it between macro and inifinity, it isn't so bad. I've had some good results with macro flowers in the wind using the D200s AF-C mode. Amazingly shallow DOF
