Looking at buying a film SLR

Hey guys i need some advice on some second hand film SLRs.

i can pick up a F601 Body and Nikkor 35-70mm Lens for about $225 or there is an ebay option of Nikon SLR F60 with 28-80mm lens for between $250 and $300.

which would be the better deal, and what film bodies would i be looking at for between $200 and $500 second hand. Baring in mind if i buy a body only i will have to buy a walk around lens as the 18-70dx will not work on a film body.

The 18-70 will fit, I just don't know if it'll work.

I have an F60 and I'd probably get it over an F601.

yeah the 18-70 wont have autofocus and may vinigarette from what i understand.

i have been thinking the f60 mainly because its newer. the F601 is nearly 10 years old. Seller says it has only had about 100 rolls through it but its still an old camera.

The 18-70 should have all functionality, but it should also vignette.

Remember that the 601 is going to be a 16+ years old camera. And design.

It will be slower, and the systems it employs are of another generation.

I'd go for the F60.

Sorry, just found that funny. Vignette I think is the term you were after; which describes the darkening of the edges of the photo ... vs a dressing for sald

Does the F60 allow use of new lenses and flashes? I remember when I was looking around years ago at film cameras, the entry level Nikon bodies had some funky incompatibilities. I can't remember if it was the F50 or the F60 that I was looking at though.

What new lens would you be referring to?

I'll try out the 80-400 and 24-120 later on.

The F60 should allow pretty well everything that's available today, excluding DX glass. Even G series glass will work (I think) on the 601, but the 601 will be a much slower camera in terms of its response, due simply to its generational age.

Yeah the 24-120VR looks to be a good option at the moment, i am also looking at other options

Thommo, I have a 601, would take the previous advice and buy slightly newer for not much more. Just tried a G lens, works but only wide open.
