Does anyone know how to set the Author/Copyright information on the RAW file when the photo is taken? That is, set the values in-camera so it gets attached on each shot.

As far as I am aware it can’t be done in camera. Can be done in PS.

PS creates another file (*.xmp) and attaches the information to that. Does anyone know of an app that will attache it directly to the file.

The D70 does allow the creation of a comment in camera which is inserted into the EXIF info when the shot is taken. You can use this to include your copyright.

tsanglabs, as Dean says, you can place it in the comment section - that's where I have mine..
The manual details the process on pp 163 and 164.

Ok, I'll try that. I was able to change the exif data with acdsee however it only allows the changing of non-RAW files.

The camera comment is the best place - it is alwasy there then, regardless of whether you shoot NEF of jpeg. And of course you can always edit it out later in need (for our competitions, for example).
And of course, this has reminded me to change the year to 2005 in my camera comment

I stand corrected on this - I have not made use of the comment feature - a question - according to Thom this comment will appear on the photo when opened - is this true?

Chris,
Depends. Some software will display the comment with the picture (for example Photoshop Elements 3.0 in Photo Review mode) but it will not be part of the image per se, only part of the EXIF.
Cheers

Thanks Dean - I have actually just been reading the iNova ebook on this subject as well and according to him it is not placed on the the photo whereas Thom says it is - that is unless I have read it incorrectly!!!

I have a copyright programmed in my camera, and the bueaty is that you can turn it off with the press of a button when you don't want to use it (such as for the challenges) and you can turn it back on again without having to retype it back in.
It does show up in Nikon View and Capture but i can't confirm any other viewer.

How did you do that, did you place it in the comments?
Edit: To be more specific what do you mean by programmed?

Chris, I have had a look at what Thom says - I think it is simply badly worded by Thom (most uncharacteristically I might add) when he talks about "what appears on your images". The comment only appears within the EXIF. Aside from that, and by way of confirmation, there hasn't been any comment appearing on my images.
In fact, it was because of what I read in Thom's book that I stuck the copyright notice in the comment section.
cheers

Another suggestion I read was to include the name of the in camera curve in the comment as I think once you take a shot this information is not available in the EXIF.
Cheers
Dean

I thought I might put an entry in the current challenge, but I can't see how to get rid of the comment in the EXIF data. I'm using Mac OS X (Photoshop v7 and/or Nikon Capture Editor).
Any Suggestions?

The easiest way if you have a good text editor (eg emacs)
you can open it with the editor and where you see the comment replace all the characters with spaces

You do this through NCC, which you install as a part of NC.

Hey MHD, please excuse my ignorance but what file do you open with the text editor? Is it the image file itself?

Yes, MHD's right.
I got rid of the offending EXIF data using TextEdit.
MHD, many thanks for the tip.
