You'll need to use the bulb mode and a remote (if you don't want camera shake).

I think the remote stops responding after 15 mins though (I read that somewhere...haven't ever varified it)

ML-L3 Is the model number. They are quite cheap. I got mine for $25 from teds ages ago (and they usually overcharge)

Where can you get one? Well if you buy my D70 in the for sale forums you get one for free :) Other than that most camera stores should be able to get them pretty easy. You could also try eBay... or Birddy?

The D70(S) are able to make long exposures to maximum limit of 30 minutes with the ML-L3 remote set on "--" shutter speed (ie. bulb-remote mode).

Be sure you grab some extra batteries along with you, specially if you're out in the colds, its not a good idea to let the battery die in the middle of nowhere.. and have no backup bodies with you, just not a good thing to happen.

Borrowed from another site

One thing I've been wanting for a while is an ML-L3 remote, but they are pretty expensive here in Australia and hard to find.

So, I went down to my local Jaycar store and picked up a TV key chain remove (code AR1730) on special at the moment for $9. I then tried all of the Sanyo TV codes (having read that Vol+ on some Sanyo codes should fire the shutter) and guess what... it works! Programming the remote with Sanyo code 11134 enables the Vol + button to fire the shutter with the remote.

Hope this helps someone.

Cheers
It does work I have used one.

Do you know the actual code which refers to that key on the "sanyo codes"??

That depends on what you are shooting. I guess any lens could do a long exposure. I have used my 18-70mm heaps.

If you didn't have a D40 I'd say get a 50 mm 1.4 / 1.8 or a 35 mm f2 prime, you can still use them but you will have to focus manually.

In the mean time just use your kit lens it should do the job well enough.
