Changing wheel position function (back to default)

Postby Geoff on Mon Jan 10, 2005 2:18 pm

Hi all,
here's what I think is a tad of a tricky one, but someone will surely know the answer. I recenlty found out that what occurs on most/all D70's is the default and mine not.

Ok...
On my camera, the front 'wheel' near the on/off power switch controls the shutter speed, and the back wheel you move with your thumb operates the appeture. I understand this is NOT the norm but I can't for the life of me work out how to swap them back. Can someone help? Thanks in advance,

Geoff.

hey geoff
this one is easy,
go into the menu > the pencil icon > command dial and set it to "no"
that should swap them around

Custom setting #14 is what you want Geoff.

YES - means rear for apeture, front for shutter speed

NO - means rear for shutter, front for apeture

cheers

Bruno is spot on. BTW, I prefer it reversed - as I shoot mainly in aperture priority having the rear dial adjust the aperture means I can keep my finger on the shutter release (half depressed to focus).

Great! Thanx...on my pencil menu I only seem to have 9 options, of which are:

R Menu Resest --
01 Beep
02 Autofocu
03 AF-area mode
04 AF assist
05 ISO auto
06 No CF Card?
07 Image Review
08 Grid Display
09 EV step

If I go past 09 it goes back to menu reset...this has me stumped :) PS - Thanx to EVERYONE for replying so damn quicky :)

Mate go into the little spanner icon.
In there you will see CMS menu
Go to that & select it.
You should now see simple, detailed pick detailed.

There now should be 25 things in the pencil menu

Cheers

I could be wrong but you should have 24 items :?
I think you have to go to the Setup menue and set CSM menu to Detail to see all options.
Again I could be mistaken It was a while ago that I read Tom Hogan's book and I used his recomendations for a starting point on keeping or changing camera defaults :)

Geoff

I'll throw a spanner in the works here...

My camera came set to OFF and I changed it to ON for CSM #14 after reading a recommendation to set it this way in Peter iNova's eBook. So mine is set like yours was to start with.

The logic is this. If the front dial is set to control shutter and back aperture newbies like me can remember which is which because your shutter finger (ie the one that presses the shutter button down) is used to turn the shutter dial.

As a side effect this reminds me that fstops are APERTURE settings and it took me a while to work this out (on my old camera there were 4 f stop settings I remembered as light to dark the bigger the number without really understanding what I was doing  )

Cheers
Peter

Good tip, I use aperture priority a fair bit, either that or plain manual so I'll try that... Thanks for the idea...

Diversity is a wonderful thing - I like it in the default mode, as it seems more logical to me that the front wheel controls the aperture, as the lens iris is in front of the shutter. Probably a hangover (sorry about mentioning that word so soon after NYE) from my manual film slr days.

Cheers

Having read all the above I'm thinking it's a good job Nikon only gave us 2 choices

Yea Stubbsy, unlike the AF-L/AE-L button which has a multitude of programmable functions.

Mine came as rear = aperture and front = shutter. I assumed it was the norm. It's comfy for me though, so I'm not going to change it.

I can think of a good reason for a programmable option.

For mode A I'd like the rear dial to adjust aperture
for mode S I'd like the rear dial to adjust shutter
for mode M I like the standard, but I think that's maily through habit - why not have a choice here too.

I'm with Onyx on this one, I also shoot mainly aperture priority, so adjusting the aperture with the rear dial whilst keeping my index finger on the shutter release is the way to go IMHO. If I'm ever shooting shutter priority I switch them, but I don't bother for manual, as I'm likely to take much more time setting up, composing etc in M mode.

I shoot mostly manual and one of the first things I consider for a shot is the aperture and DOF - so that is set before I even check the light meter - thus I'm constantly chnaging the shutter speed to allow for differing lighting circumstances and effects. Thus I love the default with the shutter at the back.
