pec pads

where in brisbane/goldcoast do they sell pec pads ?
after a lot of abuse, dusty trips, even dustier 4WD competitions and around 16000 odd photos i have some really stuck dust bunny's.
The Giotto has done a great job so far but its time to get serious

Not wanting to drag this into the wrong direction, but I was wondering...

I know everybody around here uses Pec-Pads and Eclipse/methanol for wet cleaning of their sensors. However, the manufacturer warns against using Pec-Pads on sensors. They say they're for lenses, and want you to use (much more expensive) sensor swipes instead.

What gives?

Steffen, sensor swipes are merely a mini pec pad wrapped around an appropriately sized spatula, and priced insanely high (something retarded like $8 each, whereas you get 100 pec pads for about 20 bucks).

I think basically it is because there is a decent risk of contamination during the process of wrapping and securing the pec pad around the stick thingie.

Oddly enough though, don't they also make the bare swipe stick as well? Or do they recommend that for pro camera service people?

I'm expecting Spooky to give me a call soon to arrange a similar sensor cleaning session but I've still got enough pads and methanol left Thanh. When you're only using a drop or two per swipe, that stuff lasts a looooooong time!

Except when you don't put the lid back on properly and it evaporates on you... just when you need it most. Happened to me last week

Are you kidding? As if it would!!!

I was just cleaning the 'ol D70. I didn't want it to feel too left out. BTW. I have actually read that the D2X suffers less from dust bunnies than the D70... probably BS but time will tell I guess.

Have you mod your Prado yet?
The only thing I did was: adding on the Dtronic chip to the Patrol.
I'm thinking of lift my Patrol up to 2" + 3" TaipanXP Vortex exhaust system so Big Red can take me to the 4by track.
I'm still learning and enjoying reading from other 4by sites as overlander, Nissan Patrol 4x4 etc...

Hi Guys,

I've got a recently aquired D70 from Atorie (still missing!) and was just looking at some shots while playing around today and have noticed a few recurring marks. See pic mainly LHS (I only picked this photo because the marks show up):



So, these marks can be seen on shots from different lenses, so I'm assuming I have some dreaded sensor dust bunnies? What's my best course of action? Do I need these pec pads?

Any help appreciated.

a Giotto air rocket will probably get rid of the dust bunnies off your sensor but if they stick on too hard and air won't shift them then a wet clean with the pec pads is needed.

mine is 18 months old and somewhere around 18000 pics and this was my first wet clean

I thought so, just wanted it confirmed. I took the brush off myt old blower and had a little go, but not quite enough. Is the Giotto more focused with the air? And still worth trying before stepping up to the pec pad type of cleaning?

More focused, and substantially bigger, meaning that it provides far greater air pressure than you'll see from any blower brush. Mostly, IME, blower brushes are more accurately puffers than blowers.

And yes, definitely worth trying, and indeed, no DSLR owner should be without one.

Finally (on the subject of blower brushes) you should also not be tempted to use one of these on your sensor either. The bristles may contain oil if they're some form of genuine animal hair, and/or the brush may shed, leaving bristles on your sensor. Not a good look.

Definately get yourself one of the Giotto rocket blowers, I used to clean mine using eclipse and a swab, but since getting a blower, that's all it's ever needed... Well worth it I reckon... And it also means you're not physically touching the glass filter over the sensor so less chance of anything untoward happening

You need to read the FAQ regarding special access.


Then you need to look in the bargain section, and/or do a search. This information has been posted at least twice within the last week or two, but if you came up with a bird and a dog as some part of your answer, you'd probably be getting quite close to the correct one.

thanks to birdy i picked up some pec pads and 100% ethanol and needed to find an applicator to clean the sensor before tomorrow morning.
The lid on my tin of touch up paint was the best i could come up with after looking around for two days so i wrapped a pec pad around it, applied a couple of drops of ethanol to it and gave it a careful wipe just in one direction only as it is wide enough to cover the full width of the sensor, i then changed the pec pad and did it in the other direction.

looks like its got rid of all the spots looking at a before and after pic of a white napkin at smallest aperture but i will have to check it under a blue sky.
