Issues addressed with D70 firmware B version 1.03
When the mode dial was set to an exposure mode (P, S, A, or M) and II selected for the Color mode setting in the Custom item of the Optimize image menu, and then an option other than Custom (such as Portrait) selected from the Optimize image menu, JPEG images captured after this procedure were recognized as having the Adobe RGB color space when opened in applications with a color-management function such as Adobe Photoshop. This problem has been corrected. Greg - - - - D200 etc

It seems to me for Jpeg not NEF shooter to need upgrade the firmware.

I hope Nikon have dropped Maxwells a line about it so they don't start rejecting warranty jobs because of unauthorised firmware upgrades

I have picked up 15 kits this morning, still no firmware ver 1.03, just open couple of them and checked. I don't blame Maxwell at this ones, cos they rely on their parent's website. Even Nikon USA or Europe did not have this information posted yet. Birddog114

Birddog,
We need to (a) tell them that it's now available on the Nikon Asia website, and (b) remind them of where they heard it first. g.

I don’t think I’ll worry to much about installing this one
I’ll wait & see if something more interesting comes along later down the track Cheers Ray >> All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism<<
I’ll go with you Raydar - I only shoot NEF anyway Chris Chris

I there any need to install 1.03 before 1.04? (When and if 1.04 comes along of course). With some upgrades, you need to upgrade from a certain point..

Oh well, not to worry. I suppose we will have to make do without mirror lock up for a bit longer....

I'm no expert, but my understanding is that mirror lock up is not what it used to be - mirrors are now lighter and correctly dampened. I can't believe it was the lack of a software solution (that might be fixed by a firmware upgrade) that stopped Nikon from implementing it. If it was possible, we'd have it. The D70 is not a software limited solution AFAIK (like a canon).
If you think your shots are suffereing because of a lack of a mirror lock up then as far as Nikon is concerned, you're beyound the user group Nikon targeted at, that's all. IMHO, of course.
Yep I'll back ya up on that too Ray. Unless more information comes out about the "hidden" fixes that were added on the quiet it seems of little value to me at this time. I must admit that I can't see the point in releasing something as significant as a firmware upgrade just for this one thing. I was hoping that the new firmware would at least have taught the cam to cook! Cheers, Tim
Yay new firmware. When 1.02 was released, I jumped at the chance to upgrade - inspite of the reported lock ups and humongously blown out of proportion issues experienced by morons from that other forum...
And the firmware addressed issues not encountered by me - fix of chinese menus, shooting continuous in medium image size, high shutter colour shift, etc. I'll do the same thing time around. Even though I don't ever use the idiot mode and will never encounter the issue it's addressing...
upgrade..I'm in the same boat as a few of you guys..I'm an upgrade junkie! Every time my little Software Update icon bounces (OS X) I get on in there and upgrade away!
I've upgraded the firmware..my camera now tells jokes (better than me obviously!!). Liam =]
I just upgraded my D70's firmware. I didn't bother with freshly charged battery or all that recommended crap - that's all hokey advice to cover Nikon's arse anyway...
Follow instructions given on Nikon's website, or just make up your own as I did. During the upgrading process, there's one thing to note - the same as with the last time around, do NOT rely on the "done" indicator on the back LCD alone! This will pop up 10 seconds into the flashing, even though the top LCD still had "PG UP". Just leave it, do not press any buttons and do not turn it off - let it sit and rest for a few minutes while you go relieve yourself and come back and the top LCD should revert back to normal (with metering display etc. resemblnig the forum logo in the top left of your computer monitor currently). It requires an extra special moron to stuff this up. And you'd have to be trying really really hard.
Good advice mate
That’s were a lot of people went wrong with the last upgrade, turning the bloody thing off to soon Cheers Ray >> All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism<<
Onyx,
hehehe! have you got MLU installed and IS) 50 upgraded from 1.03? Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
Of course, you could always buy your D70 from a very nice supplier over here in the UK and get 1.03 pre-installed and ready to go over 2 weeks before its released.
(Not that its much good to most of us mind!)
Charlie, you were at the very cutting edge of this firmware upgrade, congratulations. Caused much excitement around the world, and resulted in a number of dpreview people discovering the joys of d70Users.com - good for them, good for us.

I’ve never used the P modes & only shoot in Raw.
So the update is just a different number on my LCD Up to you mate, think about how you use the cam & how you do your PP & You will answer you own Q. Cheers Ray >> All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism<<
Erm, a teensy weensy little embarrased about this question but here goes...
What is a Firmware update? I have never upgraded and am assuming that it is like a windows update kinda thing. I dont shoot in RAW, plainly because I'm not overly familiar with it. I dont think I have the RAW plugin for Photoshop CS. Man, I can take a picture but all this stuff is alien to me. Matt
Basically mate it’s the software in the cam that tells it what to do.
Thing can be changed by upgrading the firmware so it can perform better or more tricks. Yes a Windows thing sort of Cheers Ray >> All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism<<
Hey there Ray, its not much of an issue with me, but despite my earlier post I must confess to being an upgrade junkie as well and will likely weaken in the next few weeks (or days). Maybe, just maybe the aRGB bug for purples displaying as blue will be fixed. For this alone it would be worth it. I have some good pics of that problem I have, I should get my butt into gear and post them I suppose.
Maybe after I have stoked up the chainsaw and cut up the tree that blew over in yesterdays 70km/h HOT northerly buster. Better do that first! Cheers, Tim
