Tokina 12-24 users - sharpness at f/22?Hi Guys.
Just want to hear some opinions on this lens. Last night I was out and shooting at f/22, I manually focused at about 50cm (at 12mm). I'm pretty sure that at that aperture and focal length then focusing at 50cm should give everything in focus. The resulting shot was quite soft. Certainly a lot softer than at f/11. I know that lenses do deteriorate in quality when you close the aperture down a lot, but this is very noticable. Any similar experiences? Cheers, Owen.
Its all about how light is diffracted on a cropped APS-C sized sensor (not full frame)
http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/te ... ction.html On your Tokina (as with my 10mm Sigma) - I wouldn't go past f9. f11 only if I needed to The DoF on lenses this wide at f9 is huge anyway Last edited by pharmer on Fri Jun 02, 2006 3:45 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Trieu, Go out and try shooting ducks tonight, you'll see what's his impressions Birddog114

Appreciate the comments guys. Thanks for the link too pharmer, the sampleim ages in there pretty much represent what I experienced... but perhaps I managed to bump the tripod a little or something... more testing is required
Thanks guys. Owen.

Oh.. I see.
I want to hit the town tonight to test some more shots with my new Tokina.. but my wife is getting abit annoyed with me spending too much time taking photo's.... Might have to get into Macro photography, that way I can take shots in the home Cheers,

start taking LOTS of shots of your wife... then when you start to annoy her too much she'll tell you to go away, that's when you can go and do your thing outside
Owen, I never use my Sigma 12-24 past f8-f10. At that aperture virtually everything from the lens cap to infinity is in focus. It is asking a lot for a lens of this range to deal with diffraction as well. When I think about my 12-24, I always imagine there must be a prism or something similar inside to get such a wide angle at so cheap a price. A lens this wide used to be thousands of dollars, now they are the price of taking four people out to a high end restuarant.
Trieu, You perhaps have to ask owen about his trick: getting Lisa into photography. And you enjoy without any harrasment Birddog114

No $5.50 chinese lunch specials up there Glen?
The reason I tried f/22 was because I Remember reading a hyperfocal chart which said that selecting that aperture and setting the focus distance to minimum meant you could get from 15cm in front to infinity... which is what I was trying to achieve. http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html That chart tells me that at f/11 I can focus at 65 cm and have everything in focus from their to infinity. I think I'll only do that in the future. Thanks very much. Owen.
hehe it only took about 2 years. Are you a patient man Trieu?
