10 Most Popular Digital Cameras

Postby the foto fanatic on Mon Jun 05, 2006 10:28 pm

From the New York Times comes this piece on the 10 most popular digital cameras. They don't explain where their data comes from.

Note: only one of them is a DSLR; 8 of the 10 are Canon, with 1 Sony and 1 Casio making up the 10.

I wonder who writes this stuff?

Trevor

It's from CNet.com according to the side par so these will have been "rated" by the CNet editors. CNet does lots of this sort of thing.

It says the 10 most popular - that does not mean that they are the best 8)

Thanks Peter. I think they should stick to reviewing software.

Doesn't "Most Popular" mean those which have sold the most?

It could mean that. It could mean "the ones our reviewer thinks are most popular" or "the ones our advertisers say are most popular".

As I said, there is no qualification on their data. It could mean anything.

Whatever, my point is that you wouldn't want to base a purchasing decision on an article like this. :?

The usual method is based on sales figures and in this I would think that Canon would lead the pack in P&S 8)

Look at the two associated links.

The best rated cameras are nearly all Canon DSLRs, whereas the best values are mostly Fujis.

While I can accept that the two 1Ds might be at the top, they're effectively saying that the 350 is a better camera than the D2X.

I smell a strong stench of marketing here.

Boy, Canon sure make a lot of 6 megapixel cameras.

If it were indeed the most popular cameras, we'd probably have seen a Nikon S series in there and probably an Olympus and Pentax model, and possibly some Kodaks.

It's just one big marketing exercise and looks more like something churned out of a filtered Computer Shopper search than any real journalism.

I wonder if they work for a News Limited company...
