Neutral Density Filters - Recommendations

Postby SteveGriffin on Mon Jun 05, 2006 6:55 pm

I am looking to buy a / some graduated ND filter/s to try and improve my landscape work.

Are there are brands that are better or worse than others?
What would you recommend for a starter??

I have just bought a few of the Cokin filters. Optically, they are far from the best around, but I wanted something to start with. :D This biggest imperfection I have found is the reflections that occur when taking photos of bright light sources. The standard filters have no multicoating to my knowledge.

FWIW - I bought a 3 stop ND and a 3 stop grad ND. Also bought a second hand grad emerald, just cos it was cheap. :)

I do like the mounting system though. If you do end up buying Cokin gear, then I recommend Quality Camera Sales Australia as a great place to buy them. (That was not a paid announcement).

Cheers,
Tristan

Hi,

I have a Hi Tech ND4 and I find it quite nice. I also have a few grad ND, I ordered them all together. they mount on a Cokin filte holder.

As Lost Dingo said, if you have the dollars, Lee or Singh Ray are considered to be the best, but I didn't have that much spare cash :(

Have a look at this thread on Hitech filters:

Thanks for the input folks. I have ordered a set of HiTech filters from TeamPhoto in the UK and the holder/adaptor from Quality Camera Sales
