French Can Can

Well Bastille Day is fast approaching again and my girlfriends dance group gets asked every year to dance at the Bastille Day function where ever it may be that year.

I have to let her know whether or not if i want to go by this afternoon, and while i want to go, the $80 price tag is quite a lot when all I'm going there for is to watch my girlfriend dance the Can Can. While I have seen her do the dance about 5 times I still find it fun to watch. However this time I will have a camera to take photos.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this, whether its worth spending that much money to sit and listen to french music and french people waffle on for about 4 hours before the actual 10 minute dance comes up.

The Pros:
+ Will get some good high quality photos of my girlfriend and her group in the cancan outfits (which are a pleasure to look at btw )
+ Please my girlfriend by spending the night in her vicinity
+ Free food and drinks (for $80)

The Cons
- 4 hours of French People?
- 10 Minute dance will restrict my position and movement and my angles may be crap
- $80 ticket?

If anyone would like in information on ticketing etc please let me know.
If I decide to go and do take photos I will post them up.

Personally... the $80 price tag is worth it to get some good memory shots of your girlfriend. If you get a chance to take shots of loved ones, don't question it.. just do it. You'll kick yourself later on for not going and taking shots.

Also... use the opportunity to gain a few brownie points for "I'm coming to support you".

also theres the opportunity to set yourself the challenge of seeing if you can actually consume $80 worth of food and drinks! of course this may not be so pleasing to the girlfriend.

Get an Air Rocket from somewhere and give that a go - I find that 90% of dust specks can be forcibly removed using that method

Look at it from this angle.

If you start supporting your girlfriend with her hobbies than later on in future you would expect the same when you decide that you want to upgrade camera bodies or that fancy new lens.

last years venue allowed me to go 'back stage' (was more up stairs) and got to actually see her before the show. they (the girls) pretty much sit around the whole night until the time to perform comes.

hopefully i will be able to have some photo ops.
i just hope one of the girls doesnt kick my lens off :O

First, check that the Bastille day function hasn't been cancelled - with only 2 draws in the World Cup and a good chance to be eliminated before reaching the tournament's 2sd round, the French might simply not feel like celebrating!

I assume they are not paying the $80 to dance?

Just explain they need promotional photos taken and you are the photographer and you would appreciate being able to accompany them to the venue and get to the front of the stage during the dance.

Failing that, just turn up with them and say "Oh I'm the photographer" and walk in. I do it all the time

The dancers don't pay the $80 (the parents do however). Infact the dancers get paid for their time. not sure how much though.

There is no stage! it will just be on the floor, this is how the typical cancan is done (at audience eye level) they are usually pretty cramped for room, which is a problem becuase injuries can occur from this.

I might see if i can get my GF to hook me up with a free pass, however this will most likely mean i will need to photograph all night. which might suck, because most of the festivities are boring.
