Picture of the Week - 20 June 2006

I love IR photography. Back in the day, I enjoyed both B&W film infrared and colour transparency infrared,
and from that experience, I know two things - the results can be rewarding, and it is difficult to actually
produce something which is good.

More recently (ie since getting the D70), I have had a crack at digital IR (using the R72 filter on the 50mm f1.8,
through which you can hardly see a damn thing) , and from that experience I know two things - digital
IR is even trickier than film IR, and it is difficult to actually produce something which is good.

Dave B is a serious IR guy. He converts cameras to IR! How the hell he does that, I do not know, but you can
pay him to do it. See the IR Conversion section of his website for lots of interesting info.
(And where it tells you how he does it, so actually I do know)

This week's PotW is Dave's excellent Serengeti IR taken with a Canon Powershot Pro 1 R72 infrared camera
(and I assume that means Dave has worked his conversion magic on it.)

I really like this fine example of using IR to enhance an image. Sure - a shot of zebra and wilderbeast on
the Serengeti plains is going to be pretty amazing anyway, but Dave's IR interpretation takes the whole thing
to another place. Love the composition too (with reference to Matt. K's Important discovery on composition)

Congrats Dave This is great work and excellent choice for POTW.....The IR works really well for this type of scene and acentuates the image overall

It's also such a fascinating image with the wildlife overall...I'm envious of being to capture such images...always been a dream of mine to go to Africa

Dave, this is a great shot and these type of shots have always amazed me how different they look and with some picture the IR really make the pic, well done on your POTW well deserved. Oh and looked like a bloody great holliday as well.

Love it. I did try IR using the R72 filter but it was just too hard. I sold the 50 mm f/1.8 lens and now have a surplus filter.

It was a good trip: 1000+ "keepers" for me (and a LOT more that I can't bring myself to delete!) although only 78 of those were IR shots. This particular one is definitely one of my favourites, I'm glad it works for others also. BTW, the camera in question is the same IR camera I had with me in Sydney at the PIW mini-meet at the end of April (that might mean something to the people who were there).

Whilst I think this is a great photo, I am more impressed by the shear number of wildlife in the pic - must have been fantastic to see that many in their natural environment.
