Thanks for the advice Barrie - I just spent about 30 mins down at Manly beach taking some candids, it's soooo quick, the LCD and view finder are delightfully bigger and the colour saturations and sharpness that it provides is very exciting! I'm glad I bit the bullet :)

Will definately post some of my first D200 images in the next few days. I'm hoping to haul my butt out of bed early in the morning for some beach/pool/rock images. :D

Got to play with one of these babies that was hot off the streets of Saigon today. How sweet! The LCD is Sooooooooo much clearer and sharper than the D70 and the few additional functions that I had to play with like the additional spot focusing points and multi level zoom replay are just great

Lusting lusting lusting

Hmmm, I only got about 250 shots before it was down to 1 bar. I probably am playing with it and have the LCD on too much because it's still a new toy and you could be right about the battery requiring a few more charge cycles to reach full potential. I'll see how it goes.

Stallards in Hobarthave a D200 in store. They claim they have had it for a couple of weeks but nobody wants it because they want to buy it with the 18-200VR lens, which Stallards cannot get due to its short supply...
$2849. BTW I was there looking to see if I could get a look at any lenses. They had no Nikon lenses. Only Tamron and Tokina.
Same for other Hobart stores - no Nikon lenses to look at.

I had my first, hands-on look at a D200 plus battery grip, the 70-200VR, the 200-400 f/4, 17-55, 300 AFs f/2.8 and the 10.5 (what a sweet little lens, in more ways than 1) at the AIPP Queensland state conference in Palm Cove, Cairns.

I was very impressed with the D200 and its handling speed and colour rendition. I was also impressed by the feel and balance of the whole shebang i.e. with the D200, batterygrip and 70-200VR. The guy from L&P (i think :? ) photographics said that Maxwells were getting a shipment of 800 in to cover some of the backorders. I hope he is right. Can't wait to get my hands on it. :)

Also got to hear some excellent speakers Michael Meliodas (Not sure of the spelling-Landscape Photog), Graham Munroe(terrifically entertaining  ), Yervant (absolutely beautiful wedding images :) ) and Michael Coyne (photojournalist). It was a great opportunity, great day :) but that's another thread. :)

cheers
marco

When I referred to the D200 battery life compared to the D100 and D2X, I should have been more specific on what I put the D200 battery through. I took 100-200 shots (using VR and normal LCD settings ) and then downloaded directly from the Camera to PC (I know that this places demands on the battery).

Whilst I can use a card reader to download the images and improve battery life, when doing a comparison on battery life with other cameras I used the same technique on all three cameras and the D200 fell short of the other two.

If you simply took JPEG, without using a VR lens and turned the LCD down and only loaded the images using card readers then battery life would be extended (as it also would on the D100 and D2X)

I've noticed my D200 is a little bit of a battery whore, but it got better with a few charges, I've never run the battery flat though so I don't know exactly what the battery life is on mine but I'd presume it's around 500 mark for 1 batt.

The vertical grip just came in the mail today, so now I just have to wait for birdy to get back to me for another battery.
Are we there yet?

As of yesterday evening...
Stallards in Launceston Tas have a D200 body for $2799.
They told my wife it's the only one they have and won't be able to get any more for at least a couple of months.

So I phoned Maxwell right then.
They said they are in the process of sending out quite a number of D200's to stores Australia wide, not quite enough to fill all back orders, but will come close and they are expecting more in early July.

(1) I suspected a Stallards cheap sales pitch "buy now or miss out for months..." and was right.

(2) I was amused that the same store but in Hobart have the same camera for $50 more...

(3) I wonder whether this means back orders from January will be filled in the shipment going out yesterday? (pulse goes up, shutter finger twitches)

For those interested, Nikon on Broadway in Sydney (yes, I rang Maxwell to confirm warranty - no problems!) will have them very soon for $2595 (cash) or $2646 (credit card). Unbeatable for maxwell stock that I have investigated.

Nah - I'll wait a little while before I get the grip. Having come from the D70, I am pretty happy with flipping the camera on it's side for portrait shooting, and changing your hand position. I guess it'd ideal for extended battery life but I'll wait and assess :)

One of the big pluses with my D2x is the vertical grip. Didn't take too long to get used to it, but the advantage is you are less contorted taking portrait shots and have more stable hand holding since you can have both arms against your body. This is a no bariner for you Geoff given you do a lot of hand held portrait work. Tell Belle I've said it's OK to spend the scarce $$$ on it :)

Definitely the grip Geoff. Not only for portrait shots but it endows the d200 with a generally better manoeuvrability and feel also specifically assists with the cameras feel, handling and balance with the larger lenses. :)

If you are not interested in Australian warranty, how does

$1532.08 AUD sound?

$1532.08 1 x Nikon D200 10.2..

1Items in cart:
$1532.08

I added it to the cart and fed bogus info to find their freight charge - free freight - after I chose Australia as the country.

$1000 better off in the pocket, I am seriously tempted...
If I didn't suspect it would be coming *soon*, I think I'd jump.

13 in stock - D2X for $3995(approx) the prices look right and it’s not an Australian company so they are probably telling the truth 8)

That price is WITH A LENS

Wait, it's with two lenses
Nikon D2X Digital SLR Camera Factory Package
Wide Angle Lens
18-70 MM Nikkor Lens
70-300 MM Nikkor Lens
2 Filter Kit's
5 piece cleaning kit
Tabletop Tripod
55" Tripod
1GB Compact Flash Memory Card
Hi-Speed USB Card Reader/Writer
All Aluminum Hard Case
Deluxe Camera Case

HERE

Actually, I take that back. It's with one lens. I own a 70-300 and it's a paperweight, not a lens

Just read it again - 3 lenses!! Don't know what the wide angle one is, though...

I thought you guys are so busy finding some money for living and thinking something unreal in life.
Why don't just give them a go? and tell us what you get?
