D2Xs NEF files

Postby radar on Tue Jul 04, 2006 9:53 am

Hi,

just in case some of you are rushing to get the D2Xs, note that you will not be able to read your raw files in anything other then Picture Project supplied with the camera. Nikon Capture won't read it, ACR won't, bible won't, etc.

Nikon Europe even apologises for their "mistake". You will have to wait till Capture NX is available to be able to read the raw files or the others catch up.

It pays not to be at the bleeding edge

It was a long URL, so use the tinyurl above for it,

Yep! found the same thing, I bought PS CS to speed things up, but when opening a file (NEF) it automatically adjusts everything, I have yet to work out how to open a NEF file "as shot" so then I can make my own adjustments

If the D2x has a downside, its the transfer of files, and the slowness of working with them (I have a new PC + 2 Gig RAM).

I will try .JPG for a while and see, but suspect I have been spoilt by RAW

I noticed and have known it from a test drive unit two weeks ago.

It's not surprised me at all and not their mistakes as they said.
It's the way when people want to sell both hard and software in one shot.

NC NX is on the way in and NC 4.xxx is on its way out.

To fix this:

Open a NEF file into the ACR screen, and turn off all the Auto boxes (Ctrl/Cmd-U is a shortcut to do all at once).
Then to make this the default for all images from this model camera, go to the menu button on the right and Save New Camera Raw Default.

You only have to do this once (for each camera type) and your problem will be gone.
Note however, that the standalone Adobe DNG Converter uses its own set of defaults, and I think it will set Auto on every image. :( But if you only use ACR (within Photoshop or Bridge) that's a non-issue.

For those of you with a D2Xs and want to edit your NEFs before Capture NX is released. Try this

Open your NEF in a hex editor, at offset 158 where it says "Nikon D2Xs", change the 73 ("s") to 00. The do a save as keeping the NEF extension.

Should open in Capture 4.4 as a D2X file.

But I hear the NX trial will be released on July 5th supposedly anyway.
