I think my shutter died!!

Hi All,

Has anyone had any problems with their shutters on a D70.

My D70 decided last weekend to give me half a shot but than came good for some reason, today it did it again like this



Than after taking off the lenses and doing a mirror lock up and putting it back together it would only take shots up to 1/100th, anything high it did nothing, shutter went click but no shot, than after pulling it all apart again and doing a fiddle it work, it decided to work again.

But i decided to change lenses and it now comes up with "Err" and thats it wont do anything else, wont even allow me to lock up the mirror.

Anyone had a problem like this, do you know of a repair cost?

I'm pretty sure the shutters just given up after its excessive use since, think last count i was up to the 70thousand area.

70,000? Holy crap!! Nice work!

Sounds more like your mirror is causing you problems to me. I'm interested to know where you end up taking it for repairs (in Adelaide?) cos when my D200 arrives I'm planning on taking in my D70 which is having focus issues (amongst other niggly things!).

As Liam says, this looks more like a mirror issue than a shutter issue. See how the border from the shaded area into the image is blurred, rather than solid? If this were a shutter issue, I'd be expecting this to be a harder line more than a soft one.

So ...


Does this happen perhaps with just one lens? Perhaps a newly acwuired one? Is there anything protruding from the lens that should not be protruding?

Remove your lens ...

when you look into your mirror box ...

is the mirror correctly seated?

Is there anything fouling it?

What happens (in M mode) when you release your shutter?

Very gently (and don't do this if you're uncomfortable with what follows) place a finger into the mirror box and under the mirror. Try (gently) to lift it into it's picture taking (against the focus screeen) position? does it feel as though there's any fouling? Does it come back freely?

FWIW, I remember this This is something you can do with manual film cameras on purpose but can't remember quite how it was done - is it setting a flash synch out of whack with the shutter speed?

Is the shutter on the D70 vertical or horizontal travel? If it's horizontal then it can't be a shutter problem.

I think it's vertical..but I haven't looked for a long time!

ive had a look at the mirror and it seems to be in there and nothings cathing, the mirror flap at the back seems to have a little more movement than it probably should, but still dont undestand why its all of a sudden locked up.

will find out monday and keep you all posted

Mine did the same thing except it only occurred on longer exposures. If it is the same problem then Maxwell's charged over $400 to my warranty provider.

Hi there,

I am having a similar problem for the second time in less than 4 months.
I got my D70s in May 2005 - among the first few hundreds in Toronto.
Similar simptoms to yours showed up this April. After the Err came on, I took it into Henry's (local retailer) - they sent it to Nikon - was fixed in just over 3 weeks. The problem was mirror lock-up.
The same stuff happened just recently as I was setting up for the July 1st fireworks (Canada Day). I sent it in again...

I noticed that it happened, on both ocasions, as I was shooting upwards: - towards the ceiling on the first occasion, and towards the sky (fireworks) last time.
Apparently this has been talked about quite a bit on Nikonians and/or dpreview, but - of course - the retailer "never heard of this before".
I'm in week 3 now, so I should have my camera back in a week or two...

The 70 is on strike two (in less than 3 months) - I hope it oes not get to strike 3, because I just don't want to start arguing/fighting with Nikon or the retailer.

got my d70 back today after a couple of weeks, problem was the sequence motor for the shutter, 160 bucks later all is good

Good to know, i think mine is also starting to get the same problem.
