That's only 3 votes after you vote for yourself.
I don't even know if that's possible (or ethical). BTW, what happens if one person takes out 2 places? - Danny

Danny It's common for people to vote for themselves as #1. As for two places, the highest one is their only one awarded as far as I recall. Peter

Yup, if you were to get 2nd and 4th, Danny, you'd get the prize for 2nd (provided you hadn't won anything worth over $500 in the last 18-24 months) and then the person who got 5th would shift up to 4th.

Might be up and down... but sooooo much better value than anything else around...
Site is up.. slow but up... Yes, there is the vote-for-yourself problem... but if everyone does it it comes out in the wash.. Plus there are plenty of non-submitting voters.... Results distribution is interesting at the moment veeeeery interesting New page

Being new to all this, and since it has been already raised, in regards to voting for yourself. I dont believe that it is unethical to vote for yourself, what would be unethical is to waste your other votes. There are more standout photos than not and as with all art forms it is subjective to the individual viewers tastes, so vote for the photos you like and it will all sort out in the end.
As for myself I really enjoyed the comp and trying to come up with original ideas for my photos ( as for artistic strengths, I consider myself a babe in the woods) so thanks to all that made the comp possible and I am already looking forward to the next one Brett More fishing, more sport, more photo's Pentax 1stds
Tim, the point is not to disadvantage yourself. I would say that it's probably too much work to try and set it up so that you can't vote for yourself. By doing it this way, if everyone votes for themselves, you are effectively only voting for the 3 photos you like best from the rest, because the first 2 choises from all the entrants cancel each other out. By not voting for yourself, admirable as that may be, you are starting behind the 8 ball. __________

Macka, in a challenge like this with 70 entries it became a lot of work to mark every one of them. At a minute per entry, over an hour. Five votes was to make it easier for voters, to increase participation in the voting side.
I not clear on this, but with the 5 votes, do we have to have from 1 to 5 or can we go all 5's, 3x5 & 2x4 for example.
Yeah, I coulda tried it, but hey, this is probably quicker... cheers. - Danny

I found it pretty easy, I got used to judging photos at a club I used to belong to so I picked my 5 in less than 5 minutes. And I’m pretty sure the five I picked will make the placing, although there is one I’m unsure about. Last edited by obzelite on Tue Jul 18, 2006 11:23 pm, edited 1 time in total.

www.colberne.com.au I purchased a Teddy Bear this morning for the sum of $10. I named him Mohammed. This afternoon I sold him on E-Bay for $30. My question is, "Have I made a prophet?"
Optogamut,
You'll find that if you try to have two on the same number, one will automatically disappear. Glen, Why not simply have 5 votes as a minimum, but allow people to vote more should they wish to? I can see your point about it being time consuming, but it seems a shame to encourage participation by reducing the amount one has to participate. It's not from 1 to 5 specifically.
You're giving points, as I understand it. 5 points being the best to 1 point being the 5th best. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

By having just five votes it makes the choice harder and more thought is put into whose photos get voted on. Chris

so does it correspond with the views of each image? i noticed some shots have a higher number of views. probably a slight giveaway imho Simon

you can vote for an image without registering a view and you can view an image without registering a vote New page

More on the 5 votes. Another reason is that we previously allowed people to rank each image on a scale of 1 to 7. I did a mathematical analysis that showed if someone WANTED to rig things it only took a small number of people to have a significant impact on the vote. With only 5 votes to cast this made the competition safer. obzelite I've seen images with high views rank lower than ones with less views in the past so it is no indicator. In fact an image that's hard to make out small may be viewed more to see it at a larger size, but if it's crap it will not get a vote Peter

I think the number of votes should be proportional to the number of entries.
That is, for 50 entries you'd get say 5 votes but for 100 entries you'd get 10 votes. Or something like that anyway.

I'm having troubles voting via Firefox. I've logged in successfully, but whenever I complete any votes and click the Vote button it takes me back to the home screen with this message: When I do it from Internet Explorer all is fine. Same steps. I then went back to FirFox and tried to change one. Same story, same error. Peter

Viewing images at largest size for clarityOn the subject of voting, I found it important to view all the files at their largest size and go from there. It is amazing what a difference that makes. Most for better, some for worse. Just my opinion. Of course, I will not be elaborating.
Of course, it helps now that I have fast internet. I can't believe I had to put up with dialup so long. Share what you know, learn what you don't.

Cookies are set and timeout is "until they expire". Weird that it's OK for Mike. No big deal since I could do it with IE, but still odd. Peter

I'd certainly have to agree with the amount of thought I'm putting into allocating those five votes given the quality of the entries. I'm trying to make it easier by coming up with some points to asses the image against (and then adding a bit of "yeah, but do I really like it after all of that"). * technical qualities - application of DOF as technique, control of lighting sources, camera control * theme compliance - is it in the 'goals' of the theme? * conceptual ingenuity
Expressed with such eloquence there Stubbsy (but true none the less) I'd be more concerned that people may not have noticed there's 3 pages in the vote gallery as the average number of views on the first page for each image are noticibly more than on 2 and 3
Daniel, I think you'll find that the reason for this is the photos in the first page are from part 1 of the comp. They have been up for quite a while and have had a lot more time for people to look at. Most of the photos on page 2 and 3 have only been able to be viewed in the last couple of days. __________
Phillip **Nikon D7000**
Good point phillip, maybe thats it.
I thought the counters are separate though - if you look at the view counters between the part 2 gallery and the vote gallery, the count is different for the same images.
My guess is that when the photos are copied across from part 1 to the vote section, they take the view count with them at the time of copying but they are then independent of each other. So you can add to them depending on which version of the photo you look at.
But I could be wrong, it's been known to happen once or twice before. __________

I just rtied again wth Firfox on my home PC. Same problem as at work. Maybe it's my account?
