D70 replacement coming ?Surprisingly little info available on the D70(s) replacement, and since it appears to be in runout it looks to be on the way out....
Does Nikon have a history of announcing new models at Photokina ? (which is September) or will we be without an entry level dslr model until the D200 demand peters out...and they have capacity in Thailand to start up a new model ? Cheers Justin
Justin,
Why do you think that there's a replacement on the way? And why are you saying that the D70 is their entry level camera? What would you call the D50? g.

And they were entirely correct... it took nearly a year for it to appear after that time. Even today I think there are shortages? But definitely, at the time it was announced it was not available, and that was still true in March this year when I was looking at Nikon to see if they had anything like the 30D. So I suggest that treating "announcements" from Nikon as an indication of future plans rather than as meaning that you can buy the product is wise. Which suggests that it'll be more than 6 months before a replacement for the D70 hits the shelves. http://www.moz.net.nz

Er, not quite. Perhaps you should have said that "some members were ... " ? That thread seems to have all of about a dozen members engaged in the discussion. Not a whole lot of people, is it? But yes, there will certainly, in the fullness of time, be a replacement, not just for the D70s, but for its eventual replacement. And its replacement's replacement too, for that matter. But who gives a damn? Really? Will that new camera make you a better photographer? Moreover, will the speculation about that camera make you a better camera? Why not just live with what is here and now, rather than worrying about what might, or might not, be? If you're really interested, I'm sure I can find a PDF for the upcoming D3H. g.

Or people like me, who don't actually give a shit about the new model, only the fact that the current model becomes the old model overnight. Hence, there might be bargains in used D70s to be had, pretty much like we're seeing now with the D200 squarely in the upgrade path of D70 users... Although I'd say going from a D70 to a D200 is quite a step up, whereas switching from the D70 to the D75 (or whatever) is probably only good for fulfilling one's desire to live at the technological edge in the gadget world... Cheers Steffen (eagerly awaiting the D3x, so used D3H's will substantially drop in price... ) lust for comfort suffocates the soul
D90, Steffen. Steve, have you not seen the D3H product specification PDF? Would you like us to email you a copy? g.

If it is a replacement for the D70, then it's probably going to be a bit cheaper than the D70 was when I bought it, given the price of the D200. In which case it will be interesting to see the specs of it.
About 2 yrs ago I was interested in getting the then rumoured version of the new D100. It was going to be announced at Photokina in 2004 and then the following Feb Mar April....and finally the D200 nearly available 2 yrs later. A mate said to me at the time to get the D70 and get on with taking photos which I did. 20,000 shots later I'm glad I took his advice and purchased what was available at the time.
IMHO Dont speculate just take more photos now with what you've got or can get your hands on. Peter Mc Nikon & Olympus
That explains the current glut of these cameras which, until a month ago, were unobtanium.
Remember the sudden price drop on the D2x? g.

Darn, so when my D200 arrives next week it'll be the latest thing for about 12.5 days?

hopefully not a d200s, just about ready to buy one
i'd say a d70 replacement, just want to know the specs now so i can decide if a d200 is worth it, or just keep saving for d2xs or hold my breath for a new d2h. you get what you get, always learn from the mistakes
It says on the ad it will be for passionate ENTHUSIASTS.
The D200 is not for ENTHUSIASTS. There will be no D200s this soon. My bet is a cut down D200 to replace the D70s. Termy,

Ahhhh ... a replacement for the 350D then.
With respect, it is. The D2Xs is the pro camera, and neither the D100 (still available, brand new, from your friendly coffee experts, Hardly Normal) or its replacements, were/are regarded by Nikon as pro models. And please don't shout. I already have a headache. g.

Doesn't look like a D200s - it's missing the sync socket on the side, also too early for a refinement model - D200s will appear 18 months after D200 initial release (if it does appear). Most probably the D70s replacement at 3fps 10MP.
Precisely. The D200 was announced almost 12 months ago .... and when do you expect to actually see this new little beastie? I'd suggest, based upon Nikon's form, another 6 months would be a good guess. 12 months + 6 months is .... oh ... 18 months. How about that? g.

No, if the D200 _announcement_ was almost 12 months ago, your model would have the D200s announcement (not on-street appearance) in 6 months time, not 20 days time (as listed on Nikon's website). This would seem to be the replacement for the D70s. We should know in 3 weeks' time...
12 months ago, there were rumours, but the D200 was officially announced Nov 2005 (http://nikonimaging.com/global/news/2005/1101_01.htm), so I don't expect the D200s official announcement until May 2007 - if there will be one and Nikon keeps to the 18 month refinement model introduction. This model due to be announced in 20 days time does look like a D70s replacement.
I'm running a book on this. Odds on its a D200s.
Firstly the price has dropped out of the D200. Second, Nikon has flooded its dealers with whatever stock they had to ensure they didn't get stuck with an obsolete model. Notice no stock for months and now everyone has them. No accident by the Nikon wharehouse guys. Third, no way are they going to up the megapixels on a D70s replacement to match the D200 model. They will want to keep the models sufficiently different for the punter to fork out the bigger bucks on the D200/s range. In 20 days you can all rag on me but lets see. And this is where I met the leprechaun - He told me to burn things
OK AUD1000 says you are wrong and it's not a D200s. I only play for real Aussie dollars and in cash or direct deposit. Last edited by huynhie on Fri Jul 21, 2006 9:28 am, edited 1 time in total.

Andrew, They did exactly the same before the SQ came out. Remember how excited we all were when we saw that? Neither do I. I honestly feel about the same about this. As I already said, D200s for the first two reasons that Sir Tristram suggests. His third reason though doesn't hold water though. The D70 took many of the D100's features, including the same sensor size, but improved performance in many areas, and all at a significantly lower pricepoint. g.

ok, $500 on it NOT being a D200s. What are my odds? Andrew
Canon make photocopiers and stick lenses on them....
I agree.
200s no way.... Sounds like some people here are hoping for a 200s. There is nothing wrong with the 200. Termy,

I guess I mean't for a DSLR but I don't thinks that it's a D200s but something in between a D200 and a D70s judging from the command dial on the left hand side of the camera.
Nikon need to up the mega pixel count on the D70s to pass the 8mp Canon 350D.
10.2mp would give it a good advantage over this camera in the ever important(not) mega pixel race. Last edited by terminator on Fri Jul 21, 2006 9:54 am, edited 1 time in total.
