I'd like to get a proper tripod soon - did you get a ballhead with it and if so, does that come with a plate to attach to the camera or do you need to get that seperately?

I am an ignoramus when it comes to tripods

That makes two of us Matt :)
I want to get a decent tripod myself too, sometime soon.

If you get a Benro ballhead, it does come with a plate. For the RRS ballheads, you need to buy the body plate seperate.

cheers,

Matt, the Benro heads come with a plate, but I would be looking at getting some sort of L Plate anyway, that you can just leave on the camera.
