I would say that it is because the S series was probably the most famous of all Nikon cameras first coming on the market in 1950. Its appearance was likened to a Contax with the build of the Leica - and remember this was just five years after the end of WW11.

Yep, it's a film camera. 35mm Rangefinder to be exact.

I personally wouldn't pay such a high price, but then we have collectors who love these types of things.

As a current Nikon user, I am annoyed that they spent time and effort bringing these things to market rather than developing newer bodies to plug the huge gaps in their current product line.

Perhaps they have but are waiting and are instead releasing something made for the collector and / or specialist.

As a current Nikon user, I am annoyed that they spent time and effort bringing these things to market rather than developing newer bodies to plug the huge gaps in their current product line.

Although some people claim it's not the case, Nikon probably chooses their line-up for one reason only - to make a profit. Perhaps the profit made from this easy-to-develop camera, aimed squarely at nostalgic cashed-up baby boomers, will finance the development of some of the new stuff you are waiting for!

Nikon periodically bring out colletors items or specials. They did it a few years ago for the Nikon F (with gold features) and in my opinion they do it as a thank you to those who made the camera famous.

You have to remember it is not the camera but the photographer that makes a camera work!!!
