Suitable CPL for a Canon 10-22 EF-S lens

Hey guys,

A guy at the local camera shop was telling me that you can't use a standard thickness polariser on a 10-22mm, as it will vignette at the wide end? He told me that I need a ultra-thin CPL for that.

Is this true, or will a normal CPL suffice?

Yes it's true, and it may even be the case that a "thin" CPL will vignette slightly at the short end.

The question is how much you care, since a CPL is of limited utility on a lens that wide anyway - the degree of ploarisation of the sky changes appreciably over the FoV, so you end up with "lumpy" sky from the CPL. Ditto with water, although it is easier to fix there. With my 12-24 the CPL makes a difference for some reflections, but not so much that I'm going to buy an 82mm CPL just for that lens rather than using my 77mm one with an adapter (the 77mm fits my other lenses).

I use a super HMC on mine which isn't ultrathin and don't have any problem. I don't use the lens much under 12mm as it gets a bit soft so maybe that is why the CP has no issues.

I like the lumpy effect sometimes.

Yes you will need the slim filter if you want to use the lens at 10mm without the need to crop.

Also be aware with the slim filter you won't be able to use your lens cap, as there is no front thread.

Just had a look on the prices of Super HSC or PRO 1 CPL's, BIG difference's in prices huh?

You can use the Nikon CPL II - the advantage of this one is that it is a slim filter but also allows you to put the lens cap in front - the quality of the Nikon CPL is also better than the Hoya - it'll cost more though.

For the EFS 10-22 it will vignette at the wide end a little but it is a easy fix , I used a standard one that is about 7-8 mm thick and did not notice vignette at focal 12-22, so if the thin one isn't available you can use the thick one without problem, and you can use a lens cap on it.I have the Hoya pro 1+UV but end up using the standard one most of the time because the thick one is easier and quicker to turn.

Im not in the position to speak of the Canon 10-22, but using a normal Hoya CPL on my Sigma 10-20, vignettes at 10mm range when the lens is wide open.

Even tho, if it works, you will get unevenly exposed skies when you're at the maximum polarization angle (90deg). At 20mm, the exposure of sky gets better balanced throughout the frame.
