First shot with Sigma Macro APO 150mm f/2.8 EX DG

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Fozzie - great to see the first shot up from the 150mm macro.

My only comments on this would be focus point and DOF. I noticed that you have a fairly wide open aperture - try reducing it.

Take a subject and do a whole series of shots focussing on the one point and then using a whole range of apertures so that you can visually see the results.

This will give you an idea of DOF for a particular subject. Remember that when you go to 1:1 you have bugger all DOF so you need to know what you want to focus on.

Good work fozz. I am very keen on getting a dedicated macro lens, and this adds another level of interest.

Looking forward to seeing more of your macro work over the coming weeks/months

Thank you for your comments. This is all new to me and I actually sat down last night as read the lens manual.

Unfortunatley when I did the shot, gusty wind and inexperienced macro photographer, not a good mix. But I will carry on regardless.

Lens build is good and AF fast.

Just a quick question: I haven't been able to easily find the info on Sigma's lense naming.

As I understand it DG means for digital?
EX is to do with Low dispersion glass? (EDIT: Found that it refers to "Excellence", considered to be pro type lense)
APO I'm not sure?
HSM refers to the AF motors (silent/quiet)?

Basically I'm trying to understand the difference between:
Sigma 105mm Macro EX DG f2.8 AU$510.00
Sigma 150mm APO Macro F2.8 EX DG HSM AU$900.00
other than the focal length.

Well the major difference is the extra 45mm plus HSM is a hypersonic motor - fast and quite

Nice first shot Fozzie. I agree with what Chris said. It's difficult shooting macro in windy conditions though. Plus with the apertures needed to get decent DOF a tripod is often needed. When I use my macro lens I only ever use manual focus.

Can't wait to see more as i'm interested to see how this lens performs.
